Genbu no miko Marie I had been wondering about that, too. And at the present I think clorea would be the make the most sense out of the diseases listed. do you mean cholera?(sp) that is a terrible desise from the drinking water yes but i doubt it...... it is a desise that causes harsh vomitting and basically dehydrates you from what iv'e learned. his symptoms didnt match...

Eyes Shiraki ASTROMANTIC The symptoms and the way Kenshin transmits it to Kaoru suggest syphilis. hmmm i kinda agree with you i heard an idiot say tuberculosus but that can't be because it seems like an std because of how he passes it to kaoru..... but then i again he has a bandage on his throat i always thought it was a combination of desises considering how he acted in the end.*he sheds a tear* he also seemed to forget. he loved kaoru to the end i intend to be that way with my love... Wrong. Syphilis in its final, fatal stage is much more grotesque than what was shone. Kenshin's organs would have been failing, his body possibly rotted and his brain mush. Diseases don't have to be sexually transmitted to go through partners. There would have been a significant change in appearence. The second stage of syphilis has such symptoms as hair loss, skin rashes, fatigue, et cetera. One could argue the fatigue symptom, but exhaustion is common in a lot of diseases. The third stage of syphilis leads to severe brain and heart complications. No matter how strong Kenshin was, if his heart and brain were so weakened, he would not have had the strength to walk for quite a while before death.
Tuberculosis, on the other hand, explains his death. He would have been weak, but not as weak as he would if he'd contracted syphilis. Also, one spreads tuberculosis through small things- sneezing, coughing, kissing. It explains how Kaoru would have contracted it. The fact that Kenshin coughed up blood- the key signifier of TB- makes it very clear.

Really there is no name for it...the creators said that it was a made up disease..though I do believe that Syphilis would be closests.

I had heard cholera, but I looked it up and it didn't seem to match. Syphilis isn't right either. Tuberculosis was (well, and still is) a very horrible disease that, around that time period, could easily ravage a person's body. Kenshin was powerful as a swordsman, but he wasn't immortal. His death may have resolved his life, as well as the anime, but it was soooo sad and I hated the way it ended. I like the romantic "happy ever after" endings.

I personally don't believe the OVA's as part as the real storyline since the creator himself said he wanted a happy ending. That being said.
Leprosy. Him and Kaoru were rotting away

The fact that Kenshin coughed up blood- the key signifier of TB- makes it very clear. Symptoms of syphilis are WAY more gruesome than what was depicted in the OVA, but what they showed matched TB perfectly, and it's easy to spread from one person to another (like a cold but much, much worse). Syphilis can involve mental derangement and psycosis as well as skin problems, and Kenshin showed no signs of that (besides the stuff he always had shown)

even though i am not entirely sure on how he died but, it was a great lost to us all... i actually had tears fall because out of all the shows i grew to like him the most... everything about him was awesome and i wish he did not die the way that he did... and i wish they did fully explain how and why.... but i guess everyone has a right opinion in there eyes and some of them make alot of sense but there was not enough evidence to explain how, but from what i read and remember in the show i do agree with the theory that since he lost his swordsman spirit then he slowly began losing his life to his sorrow

If you believe that Jesus Christ is the Savior of humanity and aren't afraid to say so, paste this into your signature.TB doesn't explain the rash all over his body. It was really just a made up disease explained away as the rebound effect from the rigors of Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu. Kaoru wanted to share in Kenshin's suffering, so the kami granted her wish and let her take some of his disease. That said, it's all bullshit and the real Kenshin lives to be in his 80s and see his grandchildren.
