Most important part of the body besides the brain is the nervous system.

This provides tactical information, dictates reaction time, and a good knowledge of the nervous system can be used against opponents.

The most important body part to me when I'm doing kung fu is my head. Think about what's about to come, know your opponent, and I love the philosophy and the spirit also. I also think it takes iron discipline to train regularly, so for me, it's the way you see it...the way you think, the head, the brain...

I didn't see your post here...I completly agree with you...the nervous systems comes first...for some people, it's more important to feel than to think, for others, it's the opposite...but both are really important in martial arts!

You can't train either your brain or your nervous system.

The question here is; "Which bodypart is most important to train?".
Now. Which BODY part is most important?
We'll just pretend we know absolute s**t about brains, in fact we never heard of them. And we're all blind. And we don't have supersensitive hearing or sense of smell.
What part would be most important till the moment you get all those senses back?
Simplified enough? <.<

Gawd. <.< Doesn't anybody read first posts without amswering questions that aren't asked?
Get to the point, people. Take the shortcut. Get the job done. Finish it.
Don't go around and make it last. <.<
And if that's not possible, try to avoid it instead.
A little martial art philosophy that a good deal of people on forums could use.
Not anyone specific here. Just in a biting mood. <.<

Of course you can train your brain and nervous system. We're talking about martial arts, all we do IS retrain our brain and nervous system.

Before you strated training, if someone threw a punch at you your reflex would be to cover up or duck. Now if someone throws a punch your way, if you've been training hard, you block it and get ready to throw something back.

You're recalibrating the brain's auto-pilot.

Hehe tho its worth pointing out that everybody's nervous system responds at exactly the same speed, you cant improve it. It is fixed at the speed at which electricity passes along your nerves. How your brain reacts to that information and your muscles respond to it on the other hand can be trained....

I'm not in the guild, but I have applied, so I hope nobody minds if I post here...

In the form I train in, Soo Bahk Do, the hips are the driving force behind every technique and are thusly the most important body part when it comes to training. While building up hip strength may not necessarily help a whole lot, increasing the control you have over your hips helps your balance and makes your overall technique much stronger.

Some martial arts primarily use punches. Some focus on kicks. Others rely on grappling, chokes, holds throws, etc, etc.

But there has to be one part of the body that is the 'centre', that enables good execution of technique in all of these martial arts. It doesn't matter if you include or exclude the 'martial sports' in the equation this time.

(for the discussion's sake, let's exclude the brain, or 'mind' in this case; we all know that strategy, memory, and all other tactics use the brain)

Last night was my second Chen-style Tai Chi class, and...well...my legs felt like lead afterwards...and I wasn't even doing the stances as wide as it should properly be. I was sweating, breathing a little bit hard and damned hot despite the heater already been turned off. sweatdrop

Well its obviously one of the vital organs considering without them you would kinda be dead sweatdrop
lol very true. 3nodding

The torso is important to keep balance, and be strong to sustain attacks, but you couldn't keep standing up if it weren't for your legs. Legs.

yes that is partly true 1.the torso is needed without the torso your head, arms, and legs would be everywhere else (plus you would be dead)2.you don't need legs there is a martial arts master AND master swordsman who doesn't have legs only a torso, head, and two arms so you don't need legs unless you're wanting to kick.
