Unless you have the booty bay griffon point, it's faster from ironforge.
And to own your own account, you need to buy the game (I think it's down to 20$ now) that has the install discs, and it'll come with an account key. I'm not sure whether or not you can continue to use your account or what, I've never used a trial.

That's fine, I'm just going away for two weeks and don't want to pay for those two weeks when it runs out.
From Ironforge, you go down from the city into Dun Morugh, travel east and north until your reach Loch Modan, from Loch Modan, you'll go north into Wetlands, follow the main road until you travel west into Menthil Harbor. From Menthil Harbor, you take a boat to Theramore, from Theramore, follow the main road north then South, then west so you'll enter the Barrens.
Simple enough, but as an alliance character, not worth it.
And yes, your account is frozen once the trial period is up. You can renew your account by buying A pre-paid wow card or by credit card. But you cannot renew your account with another trial account password.
