What do you mean by messing up? if u mean disk read errors then dont worry about it cause that happens to a lot of people. You can make it better but it might cost a lil bit. You need to clean the lense of the system. BUT you got to be careful b/c it is very fragile. I suggest getting someone who knows what theyre doing like a game shop or something.

if its a disk error just clean the disk off a couple of times very rarely does it mess up your game play, or ruin any of your data it usually fixes the problem for me

its very simple to fix this problem
pop open the case and then pop open the disc casing
be careful to not touch anything along the way
but once the casing is popped open take a smooth rag and wipe the lense off in a counter clockwise rotation(its the litle clear thing in the smal with thing in the center of the casing area
bam
close it up and youv got urself a nice working ps2
enjoi

If it plays dvds & dvd rom games but not ps one pr blue discs then you have a problem with the lens, its slightly out of alignment & hard to fix.

I had the same problem a few years ago. Its because DVD's are encoded differently then they used to be and the changes back and forth with DVD's mess with the system or something like that. You can get it repaired at some places, or just get a new one. Its cheaper to get it fixed though.

Ok...just because PS2 can play PS1 games doesn't mean that it can. The laser can read it...but then it degrades because of the different format as compared to what it should be reading, PS2 games. Trust me. I have a PS2 from when it originaly released and it still works because I only play PS2 games on it. I aslo got another one to test the whole laser reader myth...it's true. Eventually it can only read DVD, CD, and PS1 formated discs. Then just cd, then nothing...sucks, I know. The PS3 I haven't tested yet...but it seems to handle well with PS2 discs not sure with PS1 though. But its the laser getting messed up from the reading of improper formats. Does this help?

The best remedy is to buy the system that the games came out on...they're only about $25 used, in Game Crazy and $50 brand new so to speak. Just be careful when removing the disc though. The stupid disc clip will detach after a while and glue doesn't help...happened to me a lot lol.
