Is it without concept or question that sometime or another your characters weapon is most likely to be broken, destroyed or even shattered or perhaps in need of serious repair? Has anyone actually gone through with making they're characters weapons take a realistic amount of damage that requires the weapon to be repaired? I've done it more times then I can count. I recall someone who specifically used a weapon that was like a sword but more like a blunt object that was solid diamond that was ment to destroy and damage peoples weapon.. Is such a weapon really allowed?

I would say if the person that runs the Rp allows it, then yes it is. But if they don't allow it then, no it is not allowed.

A weapon made of pure diamond is theoretically possible.
However...

If it's just made like a shiny stick, without any special designs (Say yo catch blades) then the only way it can destroy weapons is if the user has the strength himself. Weapons can break, again, I reference D&D, if force is great enough and the weapon is weak enough. Rock is techically better than stone, but a blade is thinner, and if it hits the rock hard enough, the steel will break. Skilled warriors can target sheilds and weapons with the feat Sunder. And spells, like Ray of Rust, can damage weapons as well.
Breaking a weapon is perfectly acceptable, as long as the breaker explains exactly why it can be done at least once. The exception is, as one other said, if the thread maker doesn't allow it.

I've actually never done that, although my characters don't usually fight a lot. Still, silly me!

I'd say it comes down to the style of game you want, and the system you're using. In D&D, for example, you generally only break a weapon if it's sundered, or some similar game effect causes a break. Having a weapon that enhances this maneuver is well within the bounds of the game rules. However, be careful of pissing off the other players who might want that loot. Other systems will very in how hard/easy it is to break a weapon. For example, the Palladium Fantasy RPG has rules for breaking weapons that happen far more often, while in Exalted some weapons are far less likely to break and when they do it can be spun into an epic quest to fix them.

So, is the diamond sword-breaking weapon allowed? Guess it depends on your game: both the system and how you want to run it. If it seems like too potent of an item, then consider not allowing it, or changing how easily it breaks a weapon.

In a mutual storytelling environment, such as online roleplaying, a weapon whose main function is to destroy other weapons would only work with the cooperation of other people.

Someone's weapon is an aspect of their character, such as hair color or predilection for chocolate. Admittedly, not necessarily an IMPORTANT aspect, since you can pick up a weapon, put it down, sell it, or use another one, but an aspect nonetheless. You must have the cooperation of others if you're going to use a weapon or a technique that will alter their character in even the slightest way, and without that cooperation your weapon is not only "broken," but may as well not exist.

I for one don't like the idea of breaking weapons as a player, but from a DMs point of view it is a useful tool.
It allows you to deal with situations where you accidentally given players an overly powerful weapon and it's spoiling the game.
It can also be used to keep control of players if things get out of hand, esp in combat.
e.g.
Player decides to shoot everyone inc civilians with their shiney new machine gun. Since the aim of the quest was to SAVE the civilians the gun blows up in the players face. Player gets the hint when the rest of the party withold healing.
The Overpowered Weapon happened once in a FF5 RP where we had a "Curaga Stick" which meant that whenever we took damage the white mage would just hit us with the Curaga Stick and we'd be back at full HP.
The DM broke it so the opposition would actually stand a chance against us.

Breaking weapons is definitely possible. My RP char once combated a giant serpent-like being whose skin was much, MUCH stronger than the sword he wielded. It, of course, shattered upon contact and had to be extensively repaired. In the RP days that followed the conclusion of said battle I went through gathering and purchasing materials, hiring a smith, and actually aiding in the smithing itself.

The weapon also had special properties built into it, because of some of the forgery techniques used and materials melted into the steel to reforge the weapon. All in all, breaking a weapon can and should be used during RPs. There's nothing against breaking someone's arm, so why not the extension of their limbs?
