However I personally do NOT care for Todd McCaffrey's writing style at all. He seems to be completely disregarding the magical character backstory and development that Anne McCaffrey fostered in this series (and alot of her other work) I haven't even read the newest of the series and don't plan to buy the ones written solely by Todd.
Wise decision. I only read Todd's because they're the latest in Pern (and, like an addict, I can't get enough), but based solely on their own merit, they're awful. In his latest book, Dragongirl, I was literally jumping out of my seat, shouting quite loudly "what the hell?!" "oh my God..." and "you can't do that!" I like that he gave the watch-whers some sort of fleshing out (in the literary sense), but he must be completely daft. He's taking all of his mother's (albeit inconsistent) rules, and breaking them. (Watch-whers do not = dragons, ever, and there is no way that a creature with such stunted wings could fly night Falls for at least four hours.) Not to mention, there are random mating flights and sex throughout, as well as having almost every female character get pregnant. As a woman, I am slightly offended by this. Remember that Anne only mentions a few characters while they're pregnant (Sorka, Mirrim, and Sharra are the only ones I remember off the top of my head). Honestly, though, a queen will not rise six days after her last flight just because three other queens have risen on the other side of the continent.

Upon rereading Dragonflight, I am actually wondering why I liked it so much. It's choc full of Mary Sues/Gary Stus, and seems like everything was just handed to Lessa on a silver platter. It's kind of tedious. I'm beginning to think that I fell in love more with the world of Pern, being so well developed. Granted, my fav is still Dragonsdawn; I've always loved that one. But a lot of the others are seeming so...lacking now. I don't know what happened. sad I still love it, I'm just wondering...why? Why do I love it?
