YEEESSS!!!

tertia schola: nomina

Y'all (should) all know that a noun names a person, place, thing, idea, or event. The word noun comes from the Latin word nomen, meaning name. The word order tells you what part of speech the noun. To make it a possessive you usually add 's or sometimes just '. In Latin we use declensions. The base of the word almost always sounds the same while the ending changes. Each part of an inflected noun is called a case. Each case is defined as follows: (Most may already know this.)
Nominative: The subject of the sentence.
Genitive: Possession.
Dative: An indirect object.
Accusative: A direct object.
Ablative: The adverbial case. This case is used for ideas such as by what means, by whom, with whom, how, where, from where, and when. An adverb is not always used to tell any of these so it usually understood from text. If it is not obvious we use words such as ab-by, from, c**-with, de and ex-from, or in-in, on.
Vocative: Noun of direct address.

Declining
We decline nouns the same way we conjugate verbs: drop the ending to get the stem then add each ending for the different part of speech. There are five declensions in Latin. We will be working on the first declension in this lesson. In a dictionary, you will always find the nominative and genitive singular cases of the word so you can tell what declension it is in. (Some dictionaries add a number for beginners.) The genitive singular is the one that tells which declension the noun is in. It is always the same for each word in each declension.
i.e.
1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th
-ae -i -is -us -ei

The first declension is regular in its endings. Every word always ends with the same letters in each case.
 S/P
Nom. -a/-ae
Gen. -ae/-arum
Dat. -ae/-is
Acc. -am/-as
Abl. -a/-is
Voc. -a/-ae

Y'all might notice that some of the cases have the same endings. You can usually tell which is meant by context. The model nouns for the first declension are terra-land and porta-gate. The vocative is unimportant so I'll leave it out.
terra, terrae-land, earth
Singular
terra-the land
terrae-of the land/the land's
terrae-to or for the land
terram-the land
terra-by/with/from the land
Plural
terrae-the lands
terrarum-of the lands/the lands'
terris-to or for the lands
terras-the lands
terris-by/with/from the lands

porta, portae-gate
Singular
porta-the gate
portae-of the gate/the gate's
portae-to or for the gate
portam-the gate
porta-by/with/from the gate
Plural
portae-the gates
portarum-of the gates/the gates'
portis-to or for the gates
[portas-the gates
portis-by/with/from the gates

You did pretty well surprised

Do they teach pronounciation too in schools there ?

Aaah I took 3 years of Latin but I gave up in high school ; one of the very rare things I can remember is dominus domine dominum domini domino / domini, domini, dominos , dominorum, dominis -__-

And I'm not even sure that was right gonk

This is all there was for July?! xp
There isn't much time before July is over...someone teach me Latin!

So I have a question about capitalization...
Only names are capitalized right? Even at the begining of a sentence? Right?

Kumiko-Misaki
It might also be good to introduce cases. My brain is dead right now, so I'm not sure if cases are the same thing as declensions....but if they are, please tell me.

I'm pretty sure that the declensions are what determine the case. So yeah, you are right.

Question: Is there going to be more Latin taught even after July?

I'm quite interested.

I'm really sorry y'all. I'll have all the lessons I made, up either this upcoming week or the next week even though it'll be August. Something came up and I didn't want to come on for a while. I'm not ready to say anything about it yet, but keep an eye on my journal. I might write about it soon... crying

MonOstatos: I don't know. I don't go to school, but my books teach it. And thank you.

Je Suis Folie: I have more intense lessons in the lessons subforum if you like.

I'm really sorry I've been taking so long. I have a lot to do this week with summer coming to an end and me starting a college class. I have baby-sitting, a test to study for, dinner to make every night, cleaning, my mom coming home this Saturday, shopping... xp I'm hoping to get at least three-six lessons done by Saturday. If EI doesn't mind me continuing them.

If y'all want to know why I was gone so long without saying anything I posted a thread in the off-topic subforum.....

What's the difference between ae and ei?

(I would've made them connect, but I'm too lazy...)

Umm...EI Is going to have to answer that unless someone else can. It is slightly different, but I don't know how to explain it.
