Work Work and more Work
Stage: Teen
Kain ran his hands over the paperwork in disbelief. It had gone way too far already. After having the papers read to him, much to the heralds horror - The so-called 'Great Kain Nigel' had landed himself two jobs instead of one. Stupid, stupid, okay so he was right to try applying for a few jobs but this was too much, why did he have to apply to them all at the same time! The young herald picked up his glass, taking a long sip before thinking the rest through. Okay, the good side was....Bethan and Tamuril, wouldn't be nagging him anymore. Glazier would never have to face the cold again...and it looked like he could take his new pet with him place to place. That wasn't so bad was it?
"Hey Kain, you okay in there? You don't look ready" a familar voice came from the kitchen.
"I'll be okay Tammy...eventually." He paused for a second to take in the rest of the information "Ready, oh you mean for work...yeah I'll get to the school real soon, was just thinking it all through."
"Don't over-work yourself. Your still on training pay..." Tamuril warned her charge. There were a few clunks and clangs in the background, alerting Kain that she was washing up - proberly something he should of done.
"Yeah, yeah I know, least not when it comes to babysitting though!"
"Calm down, its not like your bringing in a fortune, its getting dark though, so in a little while you should be able to see for about an hour...its a cloudy night."
A cloudy night....been a long time since he had one of those. Back at the santum it used to happen every few weeks when he wasn't alone, but when he was, he could see every night he wanted to. That was just one of those things about moving into gaia though, scarfices had to be made. It never seemed worth it though...he had to make it worth it. Maybe his pioritities were wrong or something.
"Not excited? This dosn't seem like you Kain....is there something your not telling me?" she paused waiting for a response. Kain didn't seem to notice though.
"Kain Nigel! Do I have to yell at you like Bethan! Whats going on in there!"
"Nothing...nothing, look, i should get going now" he finally replied.
Thing is, Kain wanted to tell her, he really did but he couldn't. It would hurt Tamuril, and she had only done good for him. Tamuril took great pride in the fact - 'She Saved him from the Streets'. For the young Herald though, it wasn't quite like that. He was kiddnapped from the streets because he broke in to this place. Kain wanted to go to the home he always knew. There were still too many bad memories here. The only thing keeping him in gaia were all the other young Heralds he had met and Tamuril's feelings. Tamuril was like the guardian he never had...not that he has her anyway. Bethan seems to own him at the moment - just like a pet.
Glazier gave Kain a little mew as he got up to a hover, hearing this he reduced it ever so slightly so not get the kitten wet. "Want to come with me?" he offered his little friend.
"Sure! Wait....." Tamuril answered just as Kain picked up the kitten and fled out the door.
Why wouldn't she leave him to it? Was it that hard to really understand him? At least she tried. Glazier purred after Kain dropped back to floating pace. His little friend was getting quite used to being picked up and moved from place to place - often Kain wondered if this was the reason the kitten got lost in the first place.
"I'll drop by the petstore and pick you up a basket 'n' nibbles before we head over....maybe get something for me to eat too?" He thought aloud to his pet. Glazier mewed in response, pressing his head against the herald in order to get a little more confortable. Kain smiled a little, at least someone was statisfied with life at the moment! He slowed down even more, to let his friend sleep as he started to listen to those around him. It was still quite hard to work out where he was from time to time. Listening to people and wind direction was fine when your calm, but keeping secrets always stressed him out. If he didn't consentrate though, instint would often kick in, and scent, sound, heat and touch would fill in a picture in no time. Sometimes it was nice, to walk behind a group or beside a stranger, as it gave him a better idea of what was going on, though apparently this behavior was strange, so he tended to avoid it on days when the streets were pretty clear. Today was one of those days - no-one around.
It wasn't long before the two reached the edge of the residental end of town. Here was the place to be, when you just want to relax and watch the world go past. There were parks scattered about with large playing fields, little odd and ends shops, a little supermarket, and a general goods store (mainly used by the students rather than the familes in the area). Even when the weather was bad, everyone here seemed to fine, small children would dance in the rain, teenagers would compose in the thunderstorms, and on windy ways, families would come out to fly kites and enjoy what luck they had. The most important thing to Kain here though, was the school...and possibly the park, though that was of no concern. He placed the young kitten up onto his shoulder, hiding him slightly with one of his strong glass wings, and set off down to the main enterance to the school.
Click....bang! Kain made his way through the doors, offered his best smile to the receptionist as she tried to work out who he was and why he was here, also, why in the world, had he picked up a basket for?
Evening, I applied as a model for the evening art class. I recieved a letter this morning requesting I give it a test run tonight" he explained. The was a bit of rustling in the background, before a voice answered him.
"Model hmm, yes there was meant to be one coming in today, though they cancelled....We were expecting another, male model this time, a Kain Nigel but not until tomorrow though"
"I'm Kain Nigel... Am I not needed tonight then?
"Erm, well they are short of a model...maybe you could fill in today anyway..." Again the sound of moving papers, and the annoying clicking of testing multiple biros. At last the receptionist continued "If you just sign in here....and then go through the doors ahead. I'll send someone to call you in a moment"
Kain tried to keep smiling, it really did seem like he was being messed about, that or she was giving him a head start. They weren't very organised here to say the least. Oh well, Kain Nigel made his way through the doors ahead, escaping with just a gentle mew from Glaizer. The receptionist may of noticed this...but she was way too busy to sort that out now. He drew his hand up, picking the kitten up by the scruff so he could lay him out into his arms. The poor thing wasn't pleased with this, but Kain didn't really care at that moment in time, instead he just petted little Glazier until his disgruntled mews turned to harmonus purrs.
So this was the world of work - how strange.
Behind closed doors, a phone rang. This was followed by a few muffled voices, and a door opening rather sharply.
"Mr K Nigel is it? Come in quick now, your a little late, but the class is ready all the same"
Kain stepped forward, placing the kitten back on his should, "Erm, I don't have a last name...its just Kain Nigel....two first names" he corrected quitely. How rude...he wasn't late at all. Either way, he allowed himself to be rushed into a rather large room, filled with students, muttering, chatting, a few gasped at his appearence. After the teacher entered the room and positioned Kain within the centre of the room, in some femine pose the class hushed down a little. There was the odd clash, as the students stood, some knocking over a pencil or two. What annoyed Kain though, was not the lack of instuction, or the frozen atmosphere...but what was said 'at' him. "Hey look! I told you! Demons exist! We are going to sketch a real demon for our study" A particular student called out. The whole class stopped what they were doing, and stared, as far as Kain could work out. A little bell rang, possibly from the teacher and the students settled to work again. It looked like this was going to happen quite often. No-one is going to defend him here. This is the world of work.
