I liked the First Act with the original fairy tales being acted out, but I hated the Second Act originally because of the sequelling aspect of it. I hated the show so much I wanted to burst the boot that was over the theatre at the original production. However, I taped the show when it was on PBS and after watching the show many times over, I've grown to like it. Though it's not one of my favorites. I do admit to feeling kinship with the baker with his storyline about his missing father.

I never saw the revival. It would've been interesting, because of the changes in it. Both princes play wolves. Jack's cow is played by a human. And my favorite song "Last Midnight" is supposedly sung to the Baker's baby.

I'd be interested in anyone else's thoughts about Into the Woods.

The first time I ever listened to Into the Woods, I was a bit put off by the score, mainly because I had only ever listened to mostly pop musicals before that...then it slowly grew on me, and it's probably one of my favorites. I've actually always loved both acts. Act 1 has that fractured fairy tales quality, and then Act 2 has some of the best numbers in the show. Moments, the song sung by the Baker's Wife, charmed me when I first heard it, but when I saw Joanna Gleason sing it in the DVD of the stage performance, I fell in love with the song even more. She sings and acts the song so flawlessly (and then gets a year and half worth of applause). The show on the whole is just very moving and optimistic, despite all of the darkness that's in the second act.

Very recently (last night in fact!) I listened to the recording for the first time and I actually found it very easy to follow even without seeing it. The score was very catchy and I enjoyed it. There were times when it got a little annoying (little Red Riding Hood needs to be shot with heavy artillery! ><; ) but other than that, it was good and I recommend it. ^^

My mother bought me a copy of that when I was really young... I've seen it to many times to count. though lately, I haven't been able to find it.... I think the last time I watched it was when I was about 9 or 10... I really liked it growing up. then again I didn't know what was going on half the time.

Oh, I love Into The Woods. I just finished watching the DVD with Joanna Gleason and Bernadette Peters a few nights ago and it was amazing!! I need that soundtrack... I haven't heard much about the revival, only that it isn't quite as good. (That may be true, but I'm biased because I love Bernadette Peters.)
And I think I could actually play Little Red Riding Hood if I got the chance. xD;; Is that conceited of me? I mean, I wouldn't dare try for Cinderella or the Witch...

Yeah, kinda.

Anyway this musical is fantastic. Sondheim does it again? Bernadette Peters is priceless and though I, too, found Little Red Riding Hood annoying at times all the characters are quite fabulous and well thought out. It's a good play for all ages, I believe.
