My mom says she has to make a Wedding Cake. I thought I could help her by doing a little research. How big are wedding cakes, what color are they, what kind of cake is it, and what sort of ornaments are on it?

Well it depends entirely on what the bride and groom want. They are usually 3 tiers or more, and match the colors of the bridesmaid dresses.

The kind and the ornaments also vary, but the cake is usually iced in fondant and the ornaments are made from gum paste or marzipan (If nobody is allergic to almonds).

Look up wedding cakes on Photobucket or Yahoo Images...you will see most fall into a similar category, pretty much what water_elemental described. Most of the wedding cakes I've seen personally are 3 tiers, iced white, with perhaps a fondant ribbon border and fresh flowers on top.

I love it when I see wedding cakes that look different than the typical wedding cake. heart

Also sometimes molded chocolate/sugar and pastillage as well.

I remember the cake from my older sister's wedding...

it was around 5 tiers high. square shaped. Around the bottom of each tiers was a purple ribbon like thing. and there were jewels on these ribbons. It was so pretty.... I also remember how it tasted it. It had fruit in it. whee

most wedding cakes use marzipan or fondant.
for decorations flowers like roses are used.
they are normally made from royal icing, marzipan, and sometimes fondant.
the colors correspond with the brides maids dresses usuallyand the cake is 3 tiers or more.
