I'll Pray to the Gods Let Him Stay...I've now begun to read books on Buddhism like their going out of style. But it all still feel elusive, like something I'm desperately grasping for just beyond my reach. There are many thing I don't feel I understand properly, yet I have no direct questions to ask, to clear up my confusion. I even picked up "Buddhism for Dummies" Hoping it would help. lol
I've searched for someone who could help me in person, through various searches on various search engines, never finding anyone close enough to help.
But today, as I was continuing to read, and my book recommended Tricycles website, and I looked it up, and searched for Centers in my State, and as I was looking through the list, all the centers were upstate, where the larger cities are.
But the last on the list was a center about an hour away, it looked promising, so I clicked on its website and started looking through it.
The resident teacher is Tibetan born, raised in India, and ordained in 1986.
He also takes classes in English at the Local College, 5 minutes away from where I live.
whee
Now all I need is the way to get out to the Center enough to see what he's like.
I just need to know what to look for. Hopefully he'll turn out to be what I'm really looking for.[Give Artemis A Ten?]

That's very exciting news! Congratulations on your discovery! I'm not sure if you've seen it yet, but you may want to give this thread a quick read: How to Recognize False Teachers. You'll also want to ask what school or lineage he is part of. Don't worry about sounding rude, because it's considered an honor to be able to say what lineage or school one is part of. From there, you can research a bit more closely about that particular school, its history, its founder, its teachings and teaching style, et cetera. I can even tell you what I know about whatever school or lineage he's part of, to save you some time, if you like. Eventually all of the curiosities you have will be answered, so even if you can't formulate exact questions right now, it's okay because either you will be able to eventually, or your question will be answered before you even ask it! xd

I've just read the Recognizing False Teachers Article. Interesting, and informative, if a bit wishy washy. Anything else you can think of that I ought to look out for?
Also, I'm fairly certain that he is a Tibetan Buddhist, but I'm not sure if/what other schools in /Tibetan Buddhism he belongs too. I don't even know if there are any. sweatdrop

The 4 schools of tibetan buddhism are: Nyingma, Kagyu, Geluk, and Sakya. Common Nyingma lamas include: Dudjom Rinpoche, Chatral Rinpoche, Chagdud Tulku Rinpoche, Dilgo khyentse Rinpoche, Khandro Rinpoche, Dzongkar Khyentse Rinpoche, Katok Moktza Rinpoche, Khentrul Lodro T'haye Rinpoche, and others. If you can't tell, I am a Nyingmapa. PS. if he is geluk, make sure he is not a student of Geshe Kelsang Gyastso, or Pabongka Rinpoche.

XD What's wrong with them?
They propitiate a spirit banned by His Holiness the Dalai Lama - the same on the Great 5th Gyelwa Rinpoche had a red sang done for, and so on.
