I love this book! I read it when I was in my Freshman year in high school, I think, so I wasn't too young to not catch the satirical aspects of the story. And it is a satire on just humankind in general, not just anti-male or anti-female. It shows that how people generally seem to treat one another because of physical differences. I found the logic pertaining to dimension very interesting.

I guess it falls into the realms of Dr. Seuss, Gulliver's Travels, Alice in Wonderland, and the Animaniacs in that respect. Without the commentary, they are geared towards kids. With the commentary, they can be biting satires of the contemporary times.

Maybe the author wished to explained things in a way that anyone can understand. Maybe that's why it's a simple story.

Has anyone read Sphereland? A different author wrote it as a sequel to Flatland. It is told from the point of view of the grandson of the square in Flatland. Many many things bug me about it but in general, it isn't so bad. Not as good as the previous one, but still continues a couple of concepts that were never addressed.

I still think Flatterland makes for a better sequel. It's ridiculous and covered in bad puns, and slightly too full of stuff, but I liked it more than Sphereland for reasons that I can't quite remember after so many years. Perhaps it was the bad puns.

Bad puns? Does that mean you're also a Courtney Gibbons or Randall Munroe fan? (Brown Sharpie and XKCD, respectively)

I actually use Randall Munroe's String Theory comic whenever a thread on it is brought up in the Sci&Tech forum.

I'm also going to the xkcd get-together this September 'cause it's here in Cambridge. It's going to be crazy.

And Brown Sharpie is a much beloved comic as well. 3nodding heart

If you like those, you might also like Dresden Codak. More philosophy than mathematics, although there is plenty of physics still.

Grarg! Dresden Codak hasn't updated in a while. And just as the storyline was getting started... (yes, I know the artist is moving right now).

I recently found Meh!, a comic linked by Courtney Gibbons. Matheninjas, bunnies, pastry; all the great things in life, in one comic. Sadly, it has ended.

So...umm...sorry for derailing this thread for a little bit.
