Hatter lay sprawled on the sofa in the den, hat laid aside on on a coffee table. He was half asleep, pondering a riddle he'd read in a book that lay open on the floor.

'What sneaks through doors and windows without knocking? What heats an unlit stove? What gives the cat a snug place to rest?'

Clearly it was some kind of cat-loving ghost, although he wondered where the stove came in. Maybe there was some kind of loophole where you were permitted to overlook parts of a riddle that did not make sense to the answer? Maybe the riddle-writer had made some kind of mistake. Yes, that was possible.

It was so quiet, though... it made it nearly impossible to think. The silence was deafening. This was pretty unusual for this house too. Usually it was all chaos there. The Mad Hatter was pretty disappointed about it too. He really wished something interesting would happen...

"A dream is only a dream while you're asleep~~ when you wake there is no such thing as a dream; it flies away like a butterfly in the air~~" the words were sung at some points, hummed at others as a small seraph bounced cheerfully down the stairs; obviously, once she was half way down the stairs, she decided that this was way too common a thing to do, and that she must do something out of the ordinary to make 'bouncing down the stairs' a bit more rare and fun.

This was how Ryuki decided to slide her frame down the railing, wheeing all the way till she was flung over the end of it; an eep was released as she crashed into a glass vase that had been previously placed over a table in the hall way. Both vase and feli flew over the edge and crash-landed on the floor; the vase and flower over the female's head, water splashed around her frame. Despite the accident, the female seemed in good spirits and laughed as she stood and shock her frame off, ridding herself of the excess water. As the flower fell on the floor on the puddle, the cheshire picked it up in her maw and strolled shamelessly into the living room. Upon a second glance around the room she spotted an oddly familiar ball of white and pink fluff whom was none other than her mate, Hatter. Almost as if she'd last seen him two minutes ago, the seraphim strolled over to him and offered him the flower she'd been carrying her maw.

Once she released the flower, she smiled, "They say it's a good day when you're with those you love; what was it that had you so profoundly dreaming here today?"

Hatter was aroused from his sleepy daze with a start when the flower fell before his nose. Was it raining flowers? That usually only happened in the spring. Then he looked up, straight into the eyes of his beloved, and a big ol' grin spread across his face. He took the flower into his paw, held it to his face, sniffed deeply, savoring the scent, then let it fall gently to the floor where it rested upon the pages of the open book. "I couldn't agree more, m'lady," he finally said, "And since I love you quite deeply and madly... well, then this must be the best of days."

And then his brow furrowed, quite suddenly. "Except..." he began. "Except that that thing which you have asked me about, that thing which has me perplexed and pondering, is a riddle of a curious nature. I'm afraid it refuses an answer, no matter how hard I try to give it one." He sighed and scratched at his head a bit before snatching up his hat from the coffee table and placed it back upon his head. It was like his security blanket... it also kept his head warm. Perhaps he was having trouble thinking because his brains had gotten cold. "Tell me dear... can you figure 'What sneaks through doors and windows without knocking? What heats an unlit stove? What gives the cat a snug place to rest?'" He sighed, waited only a second, then eagerly interjected, "'Tis a ghost of some sort, right!?" He really did have no patience.

Still sporting the same gentle smile, the seraph flopped herself down, watching her mate grab the book he'd been reading, offering her the riddle, "That is indeed a good question," there was a pause before she raised a paw to her maw, only to suddenly wink quite knowingly, "However, I think I read somewhere about a large creature called a sphinx; a strange creature indeed, that set riddles like this!" she spread her paws then, along with her wings, "It said that there are special riddles on sphinxes can answer!! Maybe this is one of those riddles!"

She seemed quite convinced of what she spoke about at this point; in fact, she was so convinced that she leaned over towards Hatter, almost as if about to whisper a secret, "The wind told me once that there's a sphinx living here in this house..." she pulled away then, placed her arms ajar to her sides and nodded, the smile replaced with the most serious expression the cheshire female had ever worn, "Perhaps you are meant to find it, so it can solve your dilemma! Or perhaps you are meant to live haunted by it, for ever; but that would not be convenient, so we shall go with the earlier explanation and assume that on such a good day as today, it can not be possible for such a thing to be true."

Never once did the small seraph look to think up some sort of explanation for the riddle (after all, it was an impossible riddle in her mind! There was nothing that could get in through a closed window, unless they broke through!). A pause followed, "Maybe it breaks through the windows and door? Or maybe the doors and windows are open to begin with?" That seemed to solve it, as far as she was concerned, but the idea of going on an adventure to try and find a sphinx was too fun to let go of, so she grabbed hold of her mate's front paws and purred, "Let's go find the sphinx to make sure!"

Hatter stared intensely at the book as Ryuki spoke, glaring at it, seeming to dare it to answer him, but it just laid flat at their paws and said nothing. He wondered if maybe this riddle book was trying to spite him, and wondered what he'd ever done to be spited so. When Ryuki spoke of the sphinx, though, Hatter's ears perked up in interest, and he glanced up. He was about to inquire how one might go about becoming a sphinx, this sagely master of riddles... but then the cheshire said that there might actually be a sphinx already in this house. Well that made matters much easier. He wondered a moment if this wind could be trusted, as he'd recently been lied to by the sky, but decided against getting between his love and her friends.

Instead, Hatter responded to her suppositions, "No. I can no longer allow this riddle to haunt me so. It is far too bothersome... and on my unbirthday, no less!" He snorted and turned up his nose at the indignity.

When Ryuki tugged at his paws, he staggered to his feet then followed her eagerly, always ready for an adventure with her. "Perhaps they do break through the doors and windows," Hatter agreed, "But then how do we explain how they heat an unlit stove." He paused to think a moment, then wondered aloud, "Perhaps it is an electric stove, and needs not to be lit?" He shrugged. It was possible.

But the more pressing matter was where to find the sphinx. "Now... where does one even begin to look for a sphinx?" he questioned. After all, they weren't even quite certain what a sphinx was... at least, Hatter wasn't. Ryuki seemed to him the utmost leading authority on sphinxes at this moment. But that did not stop him from offering this suggestiong: "Well... sphinx... it sort of rhymes with 'sinks'. Perhaps we should check the kitchen?"
