I don't think I should be a bass player anymore. I'm in a bit of a crisis and I'm not sure what to do.
I really love playing, and being a bassist is the only thing in my life I've ever actually wanted to do, but I just can't find the motivation to practice. When I do it right it's the best feeling ever but there is just this massive cloud of apathy over me. I can just about manage to practice for maybe half an hour before I just don't want to do it anymore, and managing to practice every day rarely happens. Today I spent ages bringing all my bass stuff downstairs to practice, I got my tab books out and polished my bass and everything, but once I sat down I just ended up playing the one and only song I've actually learnt over and over for ten minutes.
I wanted to learn something new and I got a new tab book with a CD thats got some interesting stuff in it, but I couldn't even be bothered to go and get the CD player and try it out, I just came on here instead.
It's just really depressing me, because I want to do this... but if I just give up after 20 minutes then surely this can't be right?
Have you ever found yourself trapped in this kind of bass apathy? I've been playing for about six months. I know I need to find some other musical people to hang out with, but I have no one... And I have no idea how to find people. I'm a pretty shy person, I wouldn't even know where to begin.
I'm just worried I'm going to fail at this just like everything else I've believed in.

Hmm, this sounds ODDLY Familiar.
Your shyness is your biggest detriment. If there are any local music stores, i'd suggest you hang around them. I quickly made friens with a store by just coming around twice a week, and he gives me really good deals on equipment now, not to mention eh's a cool guy.
But..Do concentrate on practicing. And practice everyday. Practicing for 20 minutes everyday is better than an on one day of the end of the week.
Hang in there. We've all known that slump. You've gotta motivate yourself.
BUT. Giving up is not a good option. Unless you absolutely abhor and hate your instrument.

Only thingI can think Of is get with other people, doesnt have to be a bass player, just jam...You could be getting bored because you've only played your style and havent picked up any others.
Its been that way with me too before...So just play with people...or like what Kid said, hang out at a music store and listen to other people and get new ideas.

six months isn't too long to have played but its the time when you will be either sticking with it for ever or moving on... I suggest you look for a few folks to chill with there has to be a few people at your school or some thing that will chill with you. Don't be embarassed if they are better or any thing either just make it know that you haven't been playing very long and they will tottally understand. Lets see good ways to meet people inculd asking your friends if they know any one, maybe putting up a flyer talking about jamming out or some thing, or hanging out at music stores a lot, and not a big chain store like sam ash, a cool smaller place.

yeh, do what she said
chill at music stores
i have been asked to join a fair few bands from trying out some new basses in the stores
this one guy comes up to me when i finish this slap solo, cos i felt like showing off
and he goes, sounding good man, heres my number give me a call sometime, perhaps we can put somethin together
then i told him i was 16, been playing for about 2 years and he goes... oh, how much do you play?
cos you see, for about a year i've been practising three hours a day
like... scale practise, modes, techniques and what not, then i play for about 1 or 2 hours, so i like to think i'm fair good
still got a LONG WAY to go though
but i'm still new

No!! Don't hang out in music stores!!! Else you'd most likely be one of those peeps who are constantly in my way while i'm in there just trying to get new strings! cool
But yeah, seriously though, jamming out with friends is what got me started down the road of Bassin', and of course at the time EVERYONE was better than me. Now I rule like a rock god looking down at all who bow before my greatness .. muwhahaha.. but I digress,.. yes, jam out with friends. Could try starting a band even if it's nothing serious, but once you get into that mood of talking about music, thinking about music and you get into the thrill with combining your unique musical sound with someone else's, that's when the roar of the bass really gets interesting and it's like a drug that you'd never be able to get enough of, that you'd need another and another and you'd step over your own mother just to get one. mad D
