Warning! Rant ahead

It was cool for a few months - I was the only person I knew to play bass. I was the only person who my friends knew who played bass. In fact, I got my first bass after one of my friends asked me if I would like to play bass for his band.

That band... Well, At first it was just three of us, me and two boy guitarists. We'd go around to Kenny's house and practice every so often. Then we got a singer and a drummer, but we never practiced with them. Ever. Or just us...

So yeah.

But anyway, it turned out that Ben played bass too. I was all "Yay, koolies, someone who does bass!"
He got a guitar so he could be in a new band with me and the singer and drummer from before. But that didn't happen either.

On Tuesday, the singer's friend came into college. While I was either in a lesson or out getting food, she formed a band.
She formed a band with everyone who ever said they'd be in a band with me (Except one of the guitarists).
Basically, she stole my band. She had Ben as the bass player. So I'm completely out. Ben said "People can be in more than one band", but it would be stupid to have practically the same band, just with me and without someone else. stare

And then Kenny (guitar boy) was talking to Skiver (nickname) about finding somewhere to practice. I'm baffled, and kept asking until they told me that they were starting a band. And that Skiver plays bass.

So, out of everyone that I know, two bands are being formed, but there are three bass players, and I'm the one that's left out in the rain.

Well that bites, dude.
Maybe you should widen your circle of friends.
Bass is definetly becoming more popular than it was, I guess it's something you're just going to have to deal with.
Really it comes down to three choices:

> Get over it, find more people to hang out with and new bands, and just be happy for your friends.

> Work on your own playing until you're such an awesome bass player that both the bands will be kicking themselves for not choosing you (or they WILL choose you and just kick the other two out).

Or,

> Well, I forgot what I was going to put for the third option, but you get the idea.

s**t happens man, you just have to work through. I'm assuming they didn't call you back because you're just beginning bass (from what I gather). Do you really think you could be conducive to a band environment if you've just started? A lot of times people have to put aside there friendships to do what's good for the band, it just so happened that this time is was your turn to take a** end of the deal. Just keep practicing, you never know what'll happen down the road.

Them's the breaks kid. I was with a band for three years, and we praticed and did shows then the guitarest betrayed me and half of them went with me and the other half with him. It sucked because we were all friends and now we kinda hate the ones who are on the other side. I punched the guitarest and cried for a while, don't worry about it, just keep playing and stuff you will find some one who wants to jam with you some time or an other.
Also the bass has been the same in popularity for a long time, its that when you don't play bass you don't meet too many bass players, if you even know what bass is at all. There are a lot of bass players out there but they are usually really hard to find I know bands who have scoured the edges of the earth looking for a bass player, and never found one. at least one that didn't have a job or was willing to play. Drummers are probably next and guitarests are easy because almost every one wants to be the guitarest and the front man who does the crazy solos and gets panties thrown at him/her. heh. Just stick with it kid and you'll be fine as a dime.

I don't know many bassists. Neither does my brother, who plays for a lot of bands. Their bassist (There's only one bassist for the two bands he plays with.. He plays the sax. Ska!) is off to college this year. So he's thinking if I get a little better I can fill in... Don't think I'm ready, since I'm pretty new...

I've never had the situation of being jilted for another guy when it comes to bass, because I make a point of being flexible and quick to learn material. I was practicing alone for at least 6 months before I ever started jamming with people, so by the time bands started looking for bassists, I was able to just jump in and jam with anybody, most being very impressed with the knowledge I'd had to work at to gain. Just practice up, be versitile, and you won't have any problems with it again.
