Doomjoy: n. Having the quality of sadness and loss, but done in a beautiful way that makes you weep with both joy and the sense of impending doom.
...as defined by me.
The best example of this is something like Grave of the Fireflies. post-World War II orphans in a harsh society trying to survive is not exactly light comedy, but the simplicity of the story and the beauty of the animation gets to me every time.
So, any Penguins know of a movie like this? Mike is a timid insecure girl.

Hmm, well i think the closest movie i know to something like that would be Pan's Labrynth. It's sad and depressing and violent, but it looks beautiful, and it has a really good storyline.
And i wouldn't exactly call it doomjoy, more like awesomedepressing, but 28 Weeks Later was really good. Like, "Homg, that movie makes me want to cry, but man, was it cool!" I dunno, anyway.

Ahh, I've been meaning to see Pan's Labyrinth. Thanks for reminding me about it. It looks like about what I'm talking about, now that you mention it.
And 28 Weeks Later is just awesome, much like its prequel. Mmm, adrenaline rush. <333

Oh, wow. Grave of the Fireflies. That is such a beautiful movie. And, it's so powerful. <3
Hm...I think 'The Painted Veil' may qualify under your definition. I usually stay away from 'Doomjoy' because they upset me so~ D:

I'm not sure if this is quite doomjoy, or if you're into foreign movies, but the Japanese movie called "Vital" is amazing in the sense of sadness and loss, and is such, such a beautiful movie. I reccomend it wholly.

I like the sad movies, I have to say. I also like stupidfun movies, and dramas, and pretty much everything, but doomjoys are kinda special.
I do like foreign movies (hence Grave of the Fireflies) so I'll try and check Vital out.
The Painted Veil sounds familiar, but I don't know where to find it. Netflix time, I guess. Mike is a timid insecure girl.

Vital's a great movie.
Er... I don't know if this would count necessarily, but Curse of the Golden Flower was beautifully directed and the colors are gorgeous, yet the storyline/plot is sad.
