Practise with other players
practise with drummers
guitarists
pianists
drum machines
metronomes
or anyone with a good sense of timeing
play along to recordings
practise!
theory is always helpful aswell
look up scales and modes and play them in every position and up the neck
then you'll get the hang of playin the bass really well

What if you have no one to hang out with? Like seriously... I don't know anyone offline who plays any instrument at all, how do I know if I'm doing things right?
I have a tab book, and a 'Bass Guitar for Dummies' book, but I'm still not sure what I'm doing. I KNOW I'm not playing right, I strike the strings with one finger instead of two different ones like I see on TV, but that way hurts. =/
I'm wondering if I should find a teacher, but is that kind of cheating? I don't want to just pick up his style, I want to get my own. But not if my style sucks. -.-

i have a teacher
its not cheating
it helps... alot!
you wont pick up his style... cos when you play thats your style
two fingers is good, but i've learned if it sounds good and your getting the notes alrght then do it and theres no wrong techniques
only techniques that can open up your playing much wider
anyway
teachers are good they will teach you scales... proper left hand technique, which is important, and should usually be worked on if just starting
teachers know what to do

Never get used to using picks. They're easily lost and it kills your fingers if you're used to them and you have to play a show without one. Also, they try to take over the world. ♥

You can all ways carry a few back up picks I know I all ways have at least three or four with me, and my trusty 50 cal bullet that is for show but still, its hard to loose too. any ways pic isn't a bad thing espcially if you are going for specific sound that you can't do with fingers or slap. I'd recomend learning all of them though because its better. If you can find a teacher that's the best thing you can do. I never got a professionall one I got hooked up by a few bass player friends and brother. Also ask around I can gaurintee there are people who play in your area, you probably just don't know the sceen very well ask around and look around if you see some one at school with an instrument give them a chat and you'll find people trust me.

I don't know the scene AT ALL - I didn't even know we HAD a scene. I left school several years ago... I see a lot of kids around with guitar bags on their backs, but nothing that looks like a Bass. Besides... I think if you were a kid and a fully grown man came up to you and wanted to hang out, well... lol you'd probably phone the police, wouldn't you? ninja

yeh man
just cos you got yourself a Bass and pluck out a few notes dont mean the Scene is gonna come to you
damn, even if you were as good as wooten (hes amazing)
i'm fair sure you;d go unoticed if you didnt get out there
you gotta make friends, go to locak shows, talk to the people running it, talk to the bands
you'll make friends soon enough, i dont know many people who i dislike in the Music scene, even if they know nothing about it, at least there enthusiastic, even the people who think they know everything, but dont.
makes me feel better about myself lol
but yeh, you gotta go and make friends, not just wait around for something to happen.
