Purple Unicorn v. 3.0

PostPosted: Thu Jun 21, 2007 10:47 pm

I work at a vet hospital in San Jose and I see a lot of pet owners leaving their second animal in the car while the other is being seen for a visit. Some visits can take up to 30 mins and others go longer. I heared recently that if you leave your animal in a car for more than 10 mins its illegal. Now I'm not sure if that is true, but i was wondering if anyone knows the answer? I would never leave a kid in a car for 10 mins in the hot weather, and I would never leave my animal in the car either. I hot the answer is yes, because I see to many animals with heat stroke do to them being left in the car. crying

It may depend where you are but I am pretty sure it's illigal.

Come October 1st, it will be a misdemeanor statewide to leave your animal locked inside your car during extreme heat or cold weather.

Vets say it doesn't matter if the windows are cracked, anytime inside a hot car can be deadly for a pet. "I think it's wonderful. I think people need to be more responsible with their pets. I can't imagine being left in a car. It would be a horrible death for an animal," says Lynn Jones.

Washoe County already had an animal cruelty law on the book. But starting in October, anywhere in Nevada, law enforcement can issue a citation for leaving a dog or cat inside a car whether it's hot or cold outside.

Officers will be allowed to use force and break a window to rescue the animal, without having to pay for the damages. "We'll be a little more aggressive about extracting those animals while we will still take precautions to minimize damage. We don't enjoy damaging someone's vehicle, but there will be less hesitation."

Dr. Erin Rasmusson says dehydration would the first health issue and from there all body organs could be affected by the excessive heat.

Owners are glad lawmakers are putting pets in the spotlight. "I have called animal control before. Even the windows were open, but the dogs were really panting and miserable. So I think it should be the law," says Penny Getts.

In Reno, pets are taken to the animal control office and checked out by a vet. "It's not enough just to leave water in the car with them. They can't drink enough to cool themselves down."

The new misdemeanor will be punishable by up to six months in jail and/or a $1,000 fine.

I would never leave my dog in the car during the summer. I know I couldn't even stand to have to hit in a hot car for a minute so why should I think it is healthy for my dog? Not only that, I would be afraid someone would take the opportunity to steal her when I am not looking(we have a lot of that in our area).

I actually watched one woman with about 5 Jackrussels leave them in her van and then she went off for a doctors appointment. Those dogs were in the car for 45 minutes! Luckily that day was not as hot and sunny as most.

animals die from being left alone. If i EVER saw this i would first ask the person to take their pet out because of such risks and if they dont notify the police
