Hm . . . maybe you could try tapping your feet. I do that too, but it's a bit hard, because your guitar would start to move as well . . . or maybe, you could follow your strumming pattern. The normal pattern would be the four downstrokes, which are the four beats in the bar. There are different variations, but if you remember where the four beats are supposed to be, you won't get lost.

She's right, tapping your feet is probably the best way. They have machines that keep the beat for you, you just set what you want it in, like 6/8 time or something like that. But, once you've got the rhythm down, you can just focus on the chords and lay that s**t out.

One word. METRONOME.
Practice to it CONSTANTLY and you'll get rhythm. The belief that some people don't have rhythm is a load of BS if you practice with some steady mechanized click.

A lot of people have this problem and the answer is: PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE!!!
another suggestion would be to pick up a metronome every day and stay in beat with it. also, you should try playing more rythmicly challenging songs. for instance, try to play some jazzier stuff.

where do we go? the distance of our travels confuse me...
practice evenly spacing your picking so that it at least SOUNDS evenly paced each time.
OR buy a metronome. It's okay. Just hold my hand... and i swear everything will be all right...

BUY ONE !!! practice many types of rhythms !!! ya got to be able to say how you do it too , like "I practice my folky stuff at 90 and my metal stuff at 120 or I do some funky stuff 100 . "

I would start by learning how to spell the word rhythm.
Rhythm Helps Your Two Hips Move
Didn't want to be a grammar Nazi, but I just love that abbreviation. =P
But seriously, a metronome would be a great investment. Although I personally believe the best way to improve your timing is playing with other people, even along to a CD can help. Especially if you listen to stuff with weird timing.
Try Bloc Party, it's not too hard but they put in the odd 7/8 bar to mess you up.
