How necessary do you think it is for me to think about upgrading my mobo? Also, what's it like to install one? I've put a mobo into a new computer, but I've never switched one out, and I can see it being a pain.
Also, Vista is very usable once you work out all the tricks to make things compatible. I don't wanna start arguing with you, but I just wanted to say.
The hardware is the easiest part of the pc to understand and deal with any given day, believe you me. Software is so complicated to deal with in comparison. There really is a short list of things you can do wrong putting a pc together and of what can be wrong with the hardware. Where as with software the list is neigh infinite.
I have always built pc from scratch, so i have never had to switch out motherboards. I could ask a friend but right now I'm going to go out on a limb and give you a logical answer:
It will be a pain in the a** to basically take apart the guts of your PC, screw in a new MB and then reattach everything, and will probably take a hour or two (less if you have taken your time to completely familiarize yourself with your pc and have dicked around with the hardware a bit. i know the first time I took apart my laptop to try and figure out what was wrong with it it took me like 4 hours to get the thing fully apart because I had no ******** idea where anything went or what was connected to what, the second time took me like 30 minutes)
The new MB should boot and work fine with your current other hardware given that the socket types are still compatible and your other hardware operates on at least some part of the spectrum of bus speeds that the new MB works on.
After the initial boot, you should install the extra drivers that came on any disk you got with the MB and go to the site of the manufacturer and see if they have any drivers for the MB there.
All parts of a PC are essentially swappable, as long as they have compatible specifications.
As to "Should you?". Probably not, you have a 650i, the newest one I know of is the 780i and it's still over 240 most places I look. The upgrade would be nice, but not worth the money i would think.
If you want a real mean machine, you should look at Maximum PC's 17,000 rig, the thing is ******** nuts. Double cpu MB, sli two ati boards that were so new that they didn't even have names when they picked them out ( with some new technology that MaxPC says might put them over the top of nvidia) corsair dominator memory, water cooling (though if you're going for bust why not just use refrigeration or immersion?) etc, etc.
