Of course it's always nice to get a book as a gift. Today, as it is my eighteenth birthday, when I got home, a UPS package awaited me. It was a gift from an old boyfriend who I am still on good terms with (thankfully, as he is a brilliant guy). Inside was the book The Sorrows of Young Werther by Johann Wolfgang von Geothe. For anyone who doesn't know, it is a book about a man who is emamored with a woman he cannot have, and as far as I've read, it doesn't end too well for her. Now, this boy has been insistantly trying to get me back. Do you think his choice in a gift could be a little bit of a hint (and should I be heading for the hills xd ). Do you think that the particular book you are gifted with could somehow be a representation of the gift givers feelings of or for you?

You're one lucky girl 3nodding . When people give me books, they give me ones they think I'll like. There's never a deeper meaning, I'm afraid.

Aw, that's cute!
To answer your question, I think that it depends on the person giving the book. I'm sure some people do put a lot of thought into a book selection and try to put a deeper meaning into that choice, but on the other hand, some people might just go, "Oh, she likes books! I'll get her.... this one!"
But I do think it's cute if he used a book to try to tell you something! biggrin

acually no, scrach that my family doesn't seem to like giving me books (unless I ask them derectly for a spasific title), however they love getting books for me when they're trying to prove a point and of corse the book is all about that point... stare

I always enjoy books as gifts from friends and family. I consider each one that I recieve as precious. My g/f for example gave me the paperback copies of the Harry Potter series that I was missing.

I love getting books as gifts. There was one book my boyfriend gave me with all these things on how to be happy. I was pretty mad at the world when he gave it to me, so I guess he was telling me to lighten up!

I've never really given or received books with hidden (or not-so-hidden) messages like that. My mentor gave me N.O.W. : No Opportunity Wasted, but that was a pretty direct thing. Although, I am about to give The Great Gilly Hopkins to a girl I know who is in a similar situation to Gilly, because I hope it will help her ... I don't know, feel less alone? So maybe I do do that after all. sweatdrop

I don't think I've ever gotten a book with a hidden meaning from the gift giver. The only people that really give me books are my friends, who are mostly girls, and my family.
When picking books for people I don't try to stick a hidden meaning to it either, I just tryto pick a book I know they'll actually read, like I recently got a book on Jack the Ripper for a friend who is a Jack the Ripper fanatic.

Mainly people get me books they think I'll like. I don't think there is ever deeper meaning than that though.

My family usually gives up and gives me gift cards to book stores. My husband sometimes gets me something since he know what I like and what I've already read (like a hardcover when he knows I'm waiting for the paperback edition), but most times the books I get as gifts are from people who don't really know me, yet think they're being clever. For example, an in-law gave me Chicken Soup for the Parent's Soul for Chirstmas after I had a baby. It so doesn't interest me that I still haven't read it (and the baby's over a year old).

I think it's cute but scary that he'd try to get you back by something like that. I mean, it's so subtle that it's obvious.
I don't think I've ever gotten a book with a hidden meaning. Normally I find books on my own or people just think, "Hey! Here's a book about dragons. She'll love this!" My mom did that for Christmas when I was only twelve, and the book turned out to be really adult. I didn't mind, as the book was very well-written and the plot was very original, plus I'm mentally more mature than a lot of people my age, but she didn't really care. This was only a year and a half ago, but I'm still more mature than lots of my peers. Why can no one understand me?! gonk

I typically give gifts of things I would like to read myself.

For me, the meaning depends on the book. I mean like if it was a book you really wanted, than that person obviously knows you really well and like you enough to get you something you really want. Thats just my personal opinon of course.

Awww, that's very cute. <3 Meh, I've never gotten a book from someone that's meant something. It's usually something I asked for.
