This is...well, weird.

Quote:
The city school board ordered an investigation into an after-school program run by the YMCA in which some middle school students were taken to visit the Planned Parenthood clinic. Planned Parenthood says its presentation did not mention abortion. Ironically, it was a group of protesters outside who raised the abortion issue as they clustered around the students, thrusting brochures at them.

I suppose, if they were only talking about contraceptives, and presumably all parents agreed to this (as it was an after-school program - they must have, at least, signed up their kids for it), it isn't as bad as it sounds. Remember, PP doesn't just do abortions, they actually do all sorts of other things (like warm up the metal devices before preforming a "female exam").

Quote:
New Hampshire Right to Life, an abortion opponent, is now asking for equal time with the seventh and eighth grade students as well.

Shouldn't like, the Catholic Church, or some organization against contraceptives be asking for "equal time" since the Pro-Life Protesters are the ones who talked about abortion with the kids, and PP only discussed contraceptives? I mean, if they see a Pro-Life organization, then they would probably also have to see a just Pro-Choice organization (I bet all these kids would be so sick of field trips they would quit the whole after-school program).

Agreed. Planned parenthood still makes money off abortion though, so I still hate them as a company.

Much like how I an other anti-war advocates dislike GE and other companies which profit off of war.

Fair enough. I respect your stance, even if I don't happen to agree with it completely.

I can't say I totally hate GE, since they supply our power (they are the only option here). But making money off war is lame.

They call them Right to Life orginisations and clinics, much like many lifers call planned paretnhood an abortion clinic, even though not all are.

The same can be said for many of the opposing orginisations. Many of them do infact offer information about contraceptives, AIDs, STDs, also information on adoption, mothering techniques. The few here in Reno also offer other services and can place you incontact with social workers, dar cares, baby sitters. Many offer coupons for baby fourmala and etc.

Well, I can see the point of asking the same after-school group to visit an emergency pregnancy clinic, or a Pro-Life leaning organization that also offers many of the same services that PP does.

But I got the impression from this article that the group who wanted "equal access" to this after-school group was just a Pro-Life activist group. I might be wrong, but that was the impression that I got. And I think that, since PP didn't even mention abortion, there is no reason for this group to visit a place that will try to educate them about the "other side" of the abortion issue (since, according to the article, they already got that from the protesters at PP).

There are simply abortion clinics, that only do abortions (and counseling, and follow ups) and don't offer most of the services that PP does (exams, all of the same contraceptives and education). If this group had visited such a place, I would see the point in them needing to visit an emergency pregnancy clinic, or other similar organization (plus I would be pretty upset, since there is no reason to take middle schoolers on a field trip to an abortion clinic - that is wrong).

When I was younger, we just when to the hospital for our field trip (my mom used to work at Loma Linda Medical Center so I went there a few times).
We learned everything there but people weren't as uncomfterable since it's not just planned parenting. We got to see more stuff as well, X-rays,ultra sounds,ect....

When I was in High School, my classmate's mother worked at PP. Perhaps there was some "in" at this PP that caused the person in charge of this after-school group to go there?

A hospital does sound like a better choice, even for learning about contraceptives and the like. I didn't even consider, really, why anyone would choose to take Middle Schoolers to a PP rather than a hospital or doctor...

I don't really see the big deal. Are there any other organizations that help teens and others who cannot afford birthcontrol or blood work tests? They learned of contraceptives and how to protect themselves from pregnancy and STDs.

Yes, actualy. There are several other organizations. Many of which are stationed and sanctioned inside of hospitals and are far more unbiased. I'm opposed to this feild trip on personal grounds, yes (I've had bad personal experiences with PP's sex-ed program in the past) But I'm also opposed to it over all as there were other places they could have easly gone to.

Probably. The students at my dad's high school have learned more about forensic serology than students at any other high school simply because 1. he went there and 2. he's a forensic serologist.

I agree, many hospitals deal with all that (and less controversial then PP), plus there is many other clinics as well. Hospitals lets you see more stuff as well.
Some clinics (besides PP) have affordable birthcontrol, give out free condoms, do blood work and pregnancy test, talk about STDs,ect....PP is not the only clinic/program out there that helps people, it all depends on where you live I guess. I don't think we don't even have a Plan Parenthood here, i'm not sure what we have ( I just go to Kaiser for birthcontrol and tests at the moment).
