Chapter 9
In the city of Viridan, it was a hot and steamy morning. Umbreon woke up early from the heat, but remained still so he wouldn't disturb Kate. As he poked his head off the branch, he stared down to find a injured beautifly laying on the stump of the tree. The beautifly's wings look crumpled, and everybody knows that's beautifly's most delicate part of their body. Without their wings, they can't fly properly. Without a moments hesitance, he carefully slid Kate's head off his back and onto the branch, and then jumped down branch from branch. As he entered the first branch, he whispered to the pokemon, "Hey, you awake?". With no further response, he jumped off the branch, and landed onto the grass right next to beautifly.
Umbreon had stared at the beautifly for a few moments as he wondered what could have happened to the poor thing. Maybe she got smacked down for food, fought to save a loved one, kicked out of being a leader of a flock of beautifly, or maybe...just maybe...they beat her for the fun of it. Whatever had happened, all he knew was that she was in severe need of help. But with no Pokemon Centers around anymore, who would be there to cure the injured pokemon? After seeing her, he imagined there were a lot more pokemon just like her in this world. All alone...defenseless...and scared. Before any more moments could pass, he took his front paws and pushed her shoulders back and forward. Still, no movement was made from her, but she was still breathing. Quickly, he leaped up on his tippy toes and hugged the pokemon. As he let go, he noticed some movements. Her antenna's started to move, her body was shaking, and then...the pokemon opened her eyes.
When beautifly opened her eyes, the first thing she saw was a big, black, and scary monster. Frightened, the pokemon yelped and cried as it tried to get away. Even with all its might, the only thing it could do was wiggle inch by inch away as it cried in pain. "Hey," the umbreon said as he watched the pokemon wiggle away. "Sorry to frighten you, but I mean no harm." "I was only trying to protect you." The beautifly stopped suddenly to hear his soft and kind words, but she dare not trust him. As she laid still, she listened to him speak. "I don't mean to be noisy, but what happened to you?" asked the umbreon. As the beautifly stared, she replied "I was beaten to a pulp. You see...I was flying along, just minding my own business. When suddenly, I looked down to see a pissed raichu zapping anything in its sight. The raichu saw me and got angrier because I was in a happy mood, so she attacked me with a really painful thunder bolt. I got stricken and landed in this forest as I fell." "To protect myself, I wiggled my body to this stump and then I don't remember what happened after that. The only thing I remember is seeing you when I woke up, and that freaked me out because I'm not used to seeing pokemon from this place in my face." Umbreon listened to her story as he understood what had happened. When she was finished, she heard Kate cry his name. "Hang on," said the umbreon. "My friend is calling me."
Umbreon leaped on the branches from branch to branch until he reached where Kate was on. "Hi!" said Kate cheerfully as she held onto the branch. Before anything else could be said, Umbreon carried the girl in his mouth as he jumped back down to the ground. Once he reached the soft ground, he gently placed her next to the beautifly. Beautifly stared at the umbreon as he sat down next to a human girl. "Is that your trainer?" said the beautifly curiously. "No, but one day she will be...I hope. I protect her, it's really the opposite." "Oh," replied the beautifly. "No offense sir, but what are you doing with a stupid human? I mean...humans....pokemon...Kanto region...they just don't mix!" she asked as she stared at the girl, while the girl stared back at the beautifly in fear. "I don't care what you say! Leave us if you want. Humans aren't as stupid as you think! I thought you were different from the rest..." said the umbreon angerly.
Kate had been watching the two talking, she wondered what they were talking about in her head as she remained still. When she stared at the beautifly, her heart felt different about this pokemon. Unlike the rest shes seen, her heart was pure. The only thing she noticed was her delicate wings were ripped slightly. As the two talked, Kate thought of an antidote.
"I am not like them!" the beautifly cried. "I'm sorry for what I said...k? Forgive me?" Umbreon stared at the morning sun as he glanced back, "Yeah, sure." Beautifly stared away when she had nothing to say, there was a slight moment of silence. "Soooo" said the umbreon. "I have to get going soon...I can carry you with us if you want...until you are fully recovered..." he exclaimed. "Well...okay I guess...thankies." she said in joy.
Before anybody else could more or say something, Kate leaned over and held the injured beautifly in her hands. Beautifly had tried to get away from her grasp, but she failed in the attempt. Carefully, Kate rubbed her hands on the beautifly's wings as she felt the wound. Without a moment to spare, the wings were automatically repaired. They went back and reformed the beautifly pattern they once displayed. Kate stared at her hands in amazement as the healed beautifly flew back to the umbreon. How did she heal the beautifly? What had happened? Did the beautifly just happen to recover as she picked her up? Maybe it was just luck? So many thoughts were running through the girls head.
As the beautifly sat towards the umbreon fully recovered, she stared at the girl in amazement. "Maybe she has magical powers?" said the beautifly as she continued to stare in amazement. "Maybe..." replied the umbreon. Remembering that this girl is only 8 years old, he too wondered how she could of healed her. He wasn't the type to believe in such nonsense like magic and ghosts. "It just doesn't make sense," said the confused umbreon. "Well, whatever happened...I'm just glad I can fly again now!" said the beautifly cheerfully. "Well, I guess I am leaving now instead. I mean... I can fly and my flock is probable worried about me. Thanks for everything!" said the beautifly. "Bye," said the umbreon gloomily. Before she left, she fluttered in the girls hands as a way of saying thanks. With the girl and the umbreon staring at her, she fluttered off to find her flock.
An utter silence passed by the two when they were by themselves once again. "Should we continue on" said the girl as she tried to break the silence. Umbreon nodded his head as the girl hopped on. Together, the two ran mile after mile. On their adventure, they saw a lot of shops in the city of Viridan, but their goal was to get to the place he imagined would be fantastic. On and on they ran, through and through they'll never end.
As they continued on running, umbreon felt an utter darkness coming soon. They would have to seek more shelter if they hoped to survive. Umbreon looked all around, but there was nothing except miles and miles of grass and dirt. No trees were in sight, which means no food was in sight. He imagined Kate could survive a day without food, but he would have to find some pronto tomorrow. As he searched for shelter, he saw the dark pokemon coming out, he had to hurry. He went in a state of fear as his mind rushed of scary thoughts, but then he came to an idea. He could dig up another underground base. Quickly, he slid the girl off her back and gestured her to stay there. "What are you doing?" she asked, as she stared in amusement. The umbreon did not respond to her, instead he kept on digging and digging. It was hard work, but he could manage it. About 5 feet in, he leaped out and looked around for material. As he looked around, Kate stared at the huge hole such a little pokemon had created. When umbreon leaped back to his hole a few minutes later, he brung nothing back to hide it with. If he were to place the dirt in, it would only suffercate them. With a little bit of luck, he hoped no pokemon would notice the huge hole.
Before anybody else could spot them, Umbreon dragged the girl into the hole to sleep. Like before, umbreon twirled her body around Kate and slept on the dirty ground. Taking notice of umbreon's actions, Kate crawled down and slept along with umbreon. "Hey," she whispered as she closed her eyes. "You've done everything for me...and I still have yet to name you a respected name....I will think of the perfect one soon." she said as she closed her eyes to sleep. Together, the two fell a sleep in the cold night.

Chapter 10
Umbreon poked his head out of the hole, as he looked around the deserted place. Luckily, nobody had found them during the night. With the morning growing strong, Umbreon leaped back into the hole and carried the girl on his back as usual. Once he leaped out with Kate steadily on his back, he began to travel on the land.
Up and up the Umbreon ran, the land seemed to flow on for miles and miles. Their next goal was to get to Pewter City, one city away from cerulean; which was close by in view. As he continued on running for what seemed forever, a few trees that were growing apples had come into contact. Before he could take any, he stared up into the tree to make sure it wasn't invaded by any wild pokemon. Once several minutes had gone by and not a single movement was made, Umbreon slightly loosened his guard and came to the conclusion that it was safe.
Umbreon laid down on the ground, as the girl got the hint to get off his back. Once Kate had stepped off of him carefully, he leaped onto the branches inch by inch and once he landed onto a branch with apples; he traveled down the branch slowly and grabbed 3 juicy ones. With 3 apples being held by his tail, and 1 apple being held by his teeth, he leaped off the branch and jumped onto the ground.
As Umbreon released all 4 of the apples, he stared at the girl to find her looking as pale as a ghost. "Umbbbreee" spoke the pokemon as he tried to get her attention. Kate glanced down for a second to notice Umbreon paying attention to her, quickly she took her index finger and pointed up towards the sky. Umbreon glanced up in the bright sun to find a human riding a charizard and circling the girl. Umbreon could easily predict the charizard was getting ready for a fire spin attack....directed right towards the girl! With not a moment to spare, Umbreon dashed towards the girl and grabbed her by her shirt as he dragged her to safety. Like he expected, the charizard aimed a fire spin towards the girl seconds later after he had rescued Kate.
The human on the charizard rode the charizard down as they landed on the grass. As he jumped off, he shouted towards the girl, "So your a pokemon trainer I take it? Pretty pathetic having to be cared for by your own pokemon." Umbreon quickly leaped in front of the girl as he continued shouting at her, he wanted to protect her even though he didn't know it would only embarrass her more. "Ah ha! It is true...you dumb twit.." he had replied in response to Umbreon's actions. Umbreon wanted to attack the jerk right then and there, but Kate held onto his tail to stop him while she cupped her other hand in anger. "Well you know what..." Kate said in defense as intensity grew. "I can take care of myself, my pokemon are just nice enough to care about me! Yours are probable taken over by shadows!" she sneered. "Oh really?" the man snapped. "I hate little girls like you, lets prove your spirit to the test with a battle!" he stated. Quickly, the man recalled his charizard and sent out a dragonite, one of the most powerful dragon pokemon in the world. He must be a G-4 pokemon trainer, she thought as she stared at the second dragon pokemon he sent out. Kate then stared at the Umbreon that was still in front of her, she knew he was plenty strong...but was she strong enough to support him in a battle? Before she even thought about backing out, she leaned down and whispered to Umbreon, "You wanna battle this creep?" Like expected, Umbreon shook his head up and down to let her know he wanted to battle. To prove Kate's worthiness to Umbreon, Kate decided to continue the battle. "Before we begin," Kate had spoken. "What's your name?" "My nickname is Spade, but you shall never know my real name." he had replied. "My name is Kate" responded Kate. "I don't care what your name is!" replied the man.
A few seconds later, Kate saw Spade hop onto his dragonite as they entered the battlefield. "This is a battle, what are you doing?" asked Kate as she gave a puzzled look. "You dumb twit, I am a dragon trainer. When I battle, I want to prove not only my pokemon's worth... but also my own. Now get on your umbreon and lets fight!" Spade replied. Kate looked down again at Umbreon again, as she saw umbreon glance back up at her and give her a worried look. "I can't ride him!" "He may be able to carry me from place to place...but I could never expect him to carry me in a battle! You know he isn't a dragon!" Kate responded. "Very well," replied the man. Not a moment to soon, he leaped off of his dragonite and called out his salamence. Spade stared at the salamence looking back at him, as he said to it "Let this girl over here ride you and battle my dragonite." Like a professional trainer would, he leaped back onto his dragonite and eyed the girl as she stared back in fear. "Too chicken, eh?" cackled the man. "No!" cried the girl as she almost let her tears slip. Before she crawled onto the mans salamence, she checked in with her umbreon to make sure it was okay with him. Umbreon began to nod his head slowly as he felt a cold chill flow through him, even though he had nothing to worry....he was worried for the girls sake.
With Spade waiting for Kate to hop aboard his salamence, Kate began remembering thoughts from the past in her mind. You poor girl...you'll never make it...you aren't worth a dime...go do us a favor and die....stop loving those demons...get a way from our world...you freak... With every sentence she remembered that people had told her in the past, she felt an angry ambition flow through her veins. Beating Spade with his own game will not only prove herself of a worthy trainer to Umbreon, but will also prove herself to everybody else in the world whose called her a failure; she is not a coward and she will never back down. Such intense words for an 8 year old. With her mind intense, she stared up at the huge dragon - like salamence she was about to a board. "I can do it, have faith in me" she whispered to Umbreon as she climbed to the top of the green dragon.
Once she was positioned above his wings, she grasped onto his neck as the salamence bolted off of the ground and flew in the air. "So you made it on the pokemon safely, now lets see if you can survive without dieing." the man chuckled, as his dragonite then left the ground. "Kate, you can have the first move." he stated. "Proudly, sir! Okay salamence...fire blast!" Finally, Kate's very first battle has begun! Salamence releases a powerful fire blast as the dragonite quickly dodges it by sailing up in the sky farther. Once Kate was startled by the movement from being in the air as her salamence was flying all around, Spade told his dragonite, "Tackle followed by thunder bolt." From below, Umbreon stared up as he know what that meant, but there was nothing he could do....except watch and pray for her safety.
Spade's dragonite crashed right into the salamence as Kate held on for dear life, a violent shake was forced during the crash causing her to almost let go. The moment dragon left, he sored a thunder bolt their way. The impact was too close for them to dodge, they couldn't escape. As her salamence shook off the thunderbolt, Kate was left in a very frightened state. The thunder bolt she felt made her whole body shake like mad as she screamed in pain. With salamence not knowing what to do, Spade's dragonite went in for another surprise tackle attack. The second impact caused Kate to fall off the salamence and crash towards the ground. Luckily, Umbreon was able to catch her in the nick of time as she fell on top of his body. With all her might, she told the umbreon, "I have failed you...I'm so sorry." Soon after, the girl had blacked out from the pain of the electricity.
"Ahahahahahaha" laughed the man as he too came down towards the ground, and returned his dragons. "I knew you couldn't defeat them, you're too little. You stupid girl, stop acting like your all grown up," he sneered. Spade had felt no feelings for the girl, even as she fainted towards her doom. The man was as cold as any shadow pokemon could be. In Kate's defense, Umbreon alerted himself into a position that would usually mean....back off! "Awww. You poor thing, believe me... you don't want to know my most powerful pokemon. It would kill you in an instant. I feel sorry for you, you have to care for a dumb trainer." he said as he laughed. With that, the man flew away back on his charizard as he sailed into the gloomy sky.
Umbreon looked at the girls condition, and freaked about what to do. If he didn't act fast, his trainer could die because of a pathetic person. He remembered the healing power she once possessed, but he very well knew she most likely couldn't use it on herself...especially when she is not awake. As he stared back to where he was once heading, he imagined they would have a hospital in town. With that, he sailed down the road as fast as possible.
Running mile after mile, he sailed through the ground. With each step taken was an inch towards their goal. More then ever now, he wanted to arrive. Finally after half an hour of running and dashing, he came into the town he was aimed for....at last.

Chapter 11
In the town of Pewter City, things looked like they were almost the same. Allies with lurking pokemon were every wheres, pokemon were hiding, humans were cruel, and the air had a eerie vive to it. Their was a slight difference though as he walked by. Around a few fields, some kids that were a lone had pokemon of their own...like the evil trainer with the dragons. Things weren't as bad as they were in Pallet Town, but they were still bad.
With the girl on Umbreon's back, he peered around the town to find a hospital, and quickly. Shops, parks, everything was here...but so far, no hospital. Umbreon stopped near a patch of flowers to smell their sweeting scent, only to get shooed away by the planter frantically. Only a few miles more, he came across a huge building with a sign that said 'Pewter Clinic - will help your problems for free'. So this must be the place, he thought as he stared at the massive building.
With Kate still on his back, he walked through the door and traveled to the front desk. Like any polite person would, he got in line and waited his turn. Even when he thought everything was going all right, something broke his moment of luck. The next guest that came in was about to get in line when he noticed the huge black cat standing in back of everybody. "People, watch out!" the girl freaked. "There's a pokemon in this clinic...and he hurt that poor girl!" Everybody in front of the pokemon, and everybody around him all ran to the entrance of the clinic as they panicked in fear. "Who let that dang thing in here!" guests had started to complain as they backed away.
Quickly, one of the nurses came out to help solve the problem. When she stared at the pokemon, she was about to shoo him away until she noticed the girl on his back. "Is that your trainer?" the girl asked politely as she bravely squatted down next to the pokemon. "That thing is evil!" one of the guests hiding shouted towards the nurse. "Now now..." replied the nurse. "No mater what species...if they respect us with respect, we must do the same for them." The crowd had stopped after her words as they all gazed at her make contact with the umbreon. "Is that your trainer?" the nurse asked again as she smiled sweetly at the pokemon. Umbreon nodded his head in fear as his emotions started to get the better of him. "You want us to heal the girl?" the nurse asked as she waited for a reply. With another nod from the pokemon, she picked up the girl from umbreon's back and guestered him to follow. Once he left the room, the crowd slowly walked back like everything was normal...just like it was a few moments ago. A few of them slightly changed their opinions after seeing what happened, but not many to matter.
The nurse walked into an empty room and laid the girl down on a flat bed. She took out her stethoscope and used it on Kate. As she bent down to listen, she heard Kate's heart beating slowly. "This ain't good," she quickly said as she ran to get a needle. The nurse then injected some fluids while the umbreon watched. He had suspension about the pointy object, but decided they were doing their job...this was the only way to save Kate, so he should trust the humans. After injecting some fluids into her body, she rushed to get some pills in the drawer. Once she found what she was looking for, she grabbed a cup to fill with water and walked back to Kate with both objects. First, she held the girl up for support. Once she was held up, she slid the pill in her mouth and then poured the water in her so the pill would float down safely. Once everything the nurse could do was completed, she told the umbreon, "Let the girl rest now. There's nothing more we can do. I'll be back in 30 minutes to check on her, I have other patients now to do." Umbreon stared at her as he listened to her talk. "Don't worry, will be back...we won't forget you." With that, the nurse opened the door and closed it quietly as she walked down the hall.
With each minute passing by on the clock, Umbreon stared at the girl as she suffered. He felt so bad for her. She was only protecting herself, and now it could cost her...her life. He thought about the moment he saw her hands glowing of healing power, and the moment she healed the beautifly with just one touch. Was she capable of healing herself? After deciding anything is better then waiting for a miracle, he leaped to the bed and held her hand by his two paws. As he leaned in, he placed her hand on her heart. Nothing had happened. Instead of giving up hope, he grabbed hold of her other hand and placed that one on her heart too. Once both of her hands were touching her heart, he waited for a moment as he stared. Nothing had happened. Disappointedly, he leaped to the ground as his hopes sailed away. Just as he began to stare up at Kate, her hands...they were...glowing? Like before, it was a blueish color that surrounded her whole hand. A few seconds later, the glowing stopped as Kate awakened and sat up.
"Where...am I?" she said as she looked around. Umbreon tried to keep back his feelings, but couldn't hold it any longer. Immediately, he leaped up to the bed and jumped on Kate as his tail wagged back and forth. "Hey buddy" the girl laughed as he continued to lick her face. A nurse appeared in the room as she heard ruckus going on from the outside. "Whats wrong?" asked the second nurse. "Nothing," replied the girl as she let out a chuckle. Umbreon quickly stood up as he waited for the girl to jump on. Once she was on his back, he leaped off the bed only to find the first nurse from before run in. "Woah...amazing recovery!" said the nurse as she stared in shock. Ten minutes ago, the girl had been suffering...now, she was laughing. "Yeah, I don't really know what happened...but we're going to go now. Bye!" said the girl as she looked down at Umbreon.
The nurse held the door open for them as they allowed them to walk freely. Once they reached the front door, they noticed the darkness had already creeped by...and Kate's belly was rumbling like a drum. He knew very well that if they were to walk out now, they would be jumped by the shadow pokemon lurking near by. "Its...sure dark..." said the girl as the continued to stare. Just then, the attendant from the front counter walked by and told them, "You guys can stay here for the night... if you want. Were open 24/7 with bedrooms available...its all free too." Kate looked down before agreeing to make sure it was okay. Once Umbreon gave her the okay, she replied "Yes please! Thank you." "Follow me" replied the lady.
Kate jumped off of her pokemon's back as she followed the lady. She showed her where the food court was, and then were their bedrooms were. People were gasping as they saw the dark pokemon, but didn't say a word. "Well, I'll be letting you get to your buisness....bye now." said the lady as she quickly left. "Lets go have a bite to eat" said Kate as she traveled back to the food court.
Once they arrived, they saw tons of food being served to people. It wasn't perfectly clean...but for free, it was sure great. Hailey traveled up to the line and checked out tomato soup with a burger. Umbreon picked out a few fruits, nobody carried pokefood these days anymore. Once they sat down together, they chowed down like they haven't eaten for a week. A few kids passing by had even told her she had a cool pokemon. Some even stopped to pet the friendly creature. Umbreon was sure gaining popularity with the clinic. Once they were done, they threw away their trash and headed towards their bedrooms.
Kate was getting very sleepy, she was used to sleeping at ten as that was when they had to hide. When they arrived at their bedrooms, Kate agreed to sleep at the bottom of the bunk bed while Umbreon was at the top. Kate tucked herself into her pink, comfortable, bed as she gazed in the room. Umbreon flicked the lights off as he jumped back to his bed. "Hey Umbreon...you know how I was going to name you?" Kate said. "I want to name you midnight. I found you at midnight, and your fur is as black as the night. What do you think of it?" she asked. A purring noise was then made, meaning he must of liked it. Kate chuckled as she said, "It's settled then...midnight it is!" With that, they fell asleep into the night.

Chapter 12
Kate woke up early in the morning, and heard a faint noise in the distant. Like any person or pokemon would do, she crawled out of bed only to find her umbreon peeking out of the door. "What's wrong Midnight," she whispered as she stood still. Suddenly, a scream was heard by the front desk. Midnight quickly motioned Kate to stay, while he would go check it out. As he dashed out of the room and scented the air, Kate watched from behind. More sceaming and shouting was then heard from the front desk, people were running and crying, and nothing was making sense? Midnight...what if...oh no, she thought. Frightened by the thought of Midnight getting hurt, she ran out of the room and followed the screaming. As the screams got louder and louder, she knew she was headed in the right direction. From the left and around a corner, she came across the front desk and peeked in from the corner.
With her hidden, she listened to the conversation that was going on. "If you don't give us your money, will force you too." shouted a woman in black, who was holding a gun while shaking. "We don't have any!" screamed the lady in tears. "We help people for free, we don't have any!" she replied while tears rolled down her face. As the conversation went on, she glanced around for Midnight. He was no where in the conversation...was he hiding? She started to eye the corners in the robbery, and then...she spotted him. Her eyes caught contact of him while she saw him continue to stare at her. Had he sensed her here his whole time? Shaking her vision of Midnight, she continued to watch the conversation. "Then I want everything you own here," shouted the criminal. Right after those words, the girl started acting weird and talking nonsense. She was walking backwards, and she released the guns she was hanging on to she screamed in confusion.
Quickly, Kate turned back towards Midnight and saw his eyes glowing. He must be using confusion, she thought as she glanced back. The moment she crawled towards the wall, Midnight released his confusion attack and ran out of his hiding spot to pwn her in the wall. "Call the police now!" screamed the girl as she ran out of her hiding spot too. Right away, the attendent picked up the telephone and dialed 911. "Hello, I need the state police." said the girl calmly. Once they were connected to the state police, she quickly called out "We have a criminal, please come." "Were on our way" replied the police officer, as he hung up the phone.
With the criminal trying to escape the Umbreon's grasp, she kicked and clinges but could do nothing. "Damn pokemon!" yelled the criminal as she continued to kick. "It's okay" said the girl, as she got everybody to calm down. "Midnight has everything under control." "No need to panic anymore."
