My beliefs:
True human spirit:
Cause one: The extreme hate of the person in life drove it back up and continue in death.
Cause two: The extreme will of any person who practices magic, or dabbles to deep in it's dealings, or preforms a magical pact before death, shall have enough magical power after death to continue on, temporarily, without body and attempt to accomplish a (Usually malicious) deed.
OTHER GHASTS AND DEMONIC PRESENCES:
Orb Cause: The will of a ghost is not at full, therefore appears in this form to accomplish much less. Or spiritual discharge when a sorcerer runs out of time.
Non human presence: Things that share our world but not our plane. Temporary half-crossings allow for dabbling into human affairs.
Smoke cloud spirits: EXTREMELY violent spirit, who's purpose is to at a minimum wreak havoc, cause horrific illusions, and bring pain upon us.

Not all spirits who are bound to earth are bound here by hate. Many are kept by love for those they left behind, such as the case of my grandfather.
The different manifestations of a spirit aren't necessarily different kinds, but more like different power levels, orbs being the weakest (and therefore the most common) and apparitions being the strongest (and rarest). Also, I've rarely known a mist-spirit to be violent. Might I ask how you established these theories?

I haven't put the mist, the smoke cloud is different. I haven't encountered a mist cloud myself anyway. I found this from both my experience and others teachings. Of course, I realize not all spirits arise from hate, but that is the more powerful way of continuing on, in example:
A person murdered will almost always have enough hate to have a want to stay here,
A person who died doing what they loved, or loving someone, that may be good enough for them to let go.
Hatred and love are powerful, yes, but hate seems to linger on more than a lover.

Ghost are the souls of people who had powerful emotion to a place or they died to young. Sometimes they can't find the light and get lost. Some ghost with powerful emotion to a person, like a mother died, and shes with her child. The mean ones are poltergeists who can hurt people, pretty much like Demons, only weaker, and they were once human. Ghost can be treating at times, but sometimes that's not the case. Ghosts can also recreate what they did in their past life. This pretty much repeats it's self over and over again.
