Officials in Beijing have starting banning horror stories based on the Death Note series, including Internet-based fanworks and small-press publications. Similar bannings took place elsewhere in China in 2005, when school officials noticed that students were writing the names of people they disliked on specialty paper, pretending that they were marked for death.
