I have seen them in the rocks at the bottom of the aquarium, but have never seen any of them make it out into the big wide world of the main tank. What gives with those things. What do we need to do to keep them alive?

Tohma, you don't seem to be able to do it, sorry.

First you'll need to place your fry in a seperate tank (or perfectly clean container that has no residue of any type) that is around 1 or 2 gallons in size.

Most fry of any type hide by instinct when there are others around that may eat them, so catching them might be a problem.

Try to catch them with a small cup or container to avoid exposing them to air. However, if you must net them, make it quick. (And careful to be sure all of them are out of the net before leaving it sit out of the water for too long. They're little and get stuck quite easily!

If you can, place an airstone in the container. Some people also use a sponge filter for this sort of thing, but if you don't have one of those you can simply remove 50% of the water every day (prefferably from the bottom, and with a clean and unused turkey baster--that's what I used to use for my guppy fry).

If you think the water temperature may fall below 65°F (18°C)then you might want to look into getting a compact heater for your small tank or container. If the temperature will only fall 5° below the preffered temperature, then the heater is not absolutely needed if it's going to be a bother for you to attain one.

Now, 65°F is the lowest they are happy with, so if you want them to be healthier and more content then I'd suggest keeping the temperature around 75°F (24°C). The pH should be somewhere between 6.5 and 8.

Here is a page I found that gives advice on heating for small tanks. Now the page is talking about betta tanks, but it can also apply for any other small tanks that need heating. (:

Last, but certainly not least, is how to go about feeding your fry. The easiest and quickest thing for fry food is to finely grind some fish flakes into a powder. Whatever you have been feeding their parents will probably do for this. Some people say that this isn't good enough for fry and it isn't even close to being small enough for them to eat, but this is what I have fed my fry in the past, just hours after they have been born and they managed to eat it.

Another easy thing you can do to feed them is get the yolk of a hardboiled egg and disolve it in a small amount of water. I usually will place the yolk in a new, clean ziplock bag and place one or two tablespoons of water in it. When it's time to feed the fry, I use a clean toothpick and poke it into the now-liquified yolk and then add that pin-p***k amount to the fry tank for them to eat it. The only problem this poses is that it will easily pollute the water, so be sure to add only very minute amounts at a time. Fry empty their stomachs very quickly, so you can feed them a small amount several times a day. This will help them grow up faster.

I'm not entirely sure how often you can feed Danio fry, but when I was raising my guppy fry I fed them every 30 minutes (their stomaches emptied every 20 minutes) and they grew up very healthily. The next few batches of fry I didn't take care of nearly as obsessively as my first ones though, because that took a lot of time. Feeding them two or three times a day is alright, but during the first few days I would try and feed them as often as possible.

Be very careful to control the portions each time though. Watch them eat if need be and make sure they have finished all you have put in before you think of adding more.

If you want, you can visit your LFS and buy some liquid fry food. Another option is buying and hatching baby brine shrimp.

I hope I haven't left anything out. If anyone has anything else to contribute, please do so. heart It's quite late for me here, so I'm not sure if I've hit all the main points lol. Also, all of this is just what I've gathered out of my limited experience with raising fry, so if anything is inaccurate please tell me. sweatdrop
