Two-in-Five Americans Back Abortion Rights
May 27, 2007
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Many adults in the United States appear satisfied with their country’s pregnancy termination guidelines, according to a poll by the New York Times and CBS News. 41 per cent of respondents believe abortion should be generally available to those who want it, up five points since March.

Conversely, 37 per cent of respondents believe abortion should be available but under stricter limits than it is now, while 21 per cent think the procedure should not be permitted.

A Supreme Court ruling in 1973 gave American women the right to an abortion in the first trimester of pregnancy, and regulated the procedure during the second trimester "in ways that are reasonably related to maternal health." In the third trimester, a state can choose to proscribe abortion, except when necessary "for the preservation of the life or health of the mother."

Last month, a Supreme Court ruling effectively banned partial birth abortion—a procedure performed in the late-term of pregnancy when the fetus can survive outside the womb—without making an exception for the health of the mother.

On May 24, the Louisiana House of Representatives voted unanimously to outlaw partial birth abortion in the state. The legislation contemplates a $10,000 U.S. fine and/or a sentence of one year in prison for a person convicted of performing a partial birth abortion.

i LOVE how the media twists things

only 2 in five means the majority of Americans think the abortion laws are too lenient, yet they twist the story to make it sound like Americans are happy with abortion laws. If this doesn't prove the pro choice media bias, i don't know what else does.

check this out:

that means that 58 per cent of the population thinks abortion should be more limited, do they focus on this? nope, they go on and on about how America is satisfied with the way things are when their own freaking poll says they are NOT.

andyz cool

I notice that too. The focus is the choicers, even when they are the minority.

But, I love thinking of how pissed off those results must have made the media...

A minority is "many" now?

Fox News would be proud.

Well, compared to a group of four people, however many they surveyed is probably many.

Technically, they can use that word. Technically, killing slave was not murder.

the media just wants to create a quick buck and turn the people's words against them. they only use one quarter of the truth. maybe even less than that. with the media, its all about the rating. but, some people believe some of the bull crap that the media says. America is America. and personally, despite having a sucky media, i wouldn't want America to change.

It's basic psychology actually. Saying 2-in-5 makes you think "Wow, that's a fair amount" where if they said "Only 3-in-5 think abortion laws need revising" or something of that sort people would focus on the fact that 3/5 is a majority.

Just like if I was to say you have a 6 out of 10, chance to live you'd be like "Oh that's awesome, I have a higher chance of living than of dying" and wouldn't think about the part where there's still a high risk of you dying. Whereas if I said you have a 40% chance of dying, you'd be scared shitless.

It's all about how you word things.

I'm always checking in and reading posts, I just don't get a lot of time to actually respond. XD

Have no fear though, I am still alive!
