Chapter 1: The Beginning

“Where am I? Even more important who am I?” asked the Soaking wet blond haired man lying in the sand while staring at the blue sky over head.
Then he looked down at his cloths that felt like a ton of bricks “Noooo, this suit cost over $200 and now it’s not even worth a penny.”
The handsome young man got up and started slowly moving around and looking in all directions looking for some clue as to how he got here on this island of trees and birds.
“Food, I need to find food, water and shelter.”
The man started walking towards the tree line when something on the shore caught his eye. “What the?” He started walking towards it. Then started running once he realized what it was.
“A suitcase, it’s a suitcase!” When he reached it he opened it up and saw cloths, personal care products, some candy, a bottle of water, and condoms.
“That’s right I was on a pleasure cruise to inspire me for my next book. My name is Mike and I’m a famous author who was suffering writer’s block. I joined the cruise to relax and meet some women, but half way through a storm happened and the boat sunk.” “Okay now that that’s settled I still need shelter and more food and water.” So Mike set out with a mission.

“Urg, I feel like s**t. What the ******** hit me a ten ton truck?” The soaking wet black haired man asked.
As he looked around and then yelled “Where the ******** my boat?”
The captain jumped up and searched the sea with his eyes looking in every direction.
“DON’T TELL ME IT ******** SUNK!!! Mother of pearl why aren’t dead too then?”
The captain decided to look around more maybe he had been thrown overboard and drifted, that could mean that the boat was safe and sound on the other side of the island

“Yummmm, I never knew natural bananas tasted better then store bought. I wonder if else is here? I’m so glad I remembered what happened finally. I still can’t believe that our boat got caught in a storm and sunk.”
Mike proclaimed to himself. He was sitting in a cave he had found deep in the forest. The cave was a sanctuary from the sweltering heat during the day and the freezing cold at night. Mike had found food and shelter but, no fresh water, this made him nervous.
“If there is anyone here I hope we meet soon, it is kind of lonely without anyone to talk to. Come on there had to be at least 50 people on the ship not even counting crew, how can I be the only survivor? Then again there is a lot of island around here, maybe …, no there is going to be tons of people on this island when I start looking. It’s getting late so I’ll sleep for now and set out at first light.”

“It’s no use my boat must have sunk, and I instead of going down with the god forsaken boat hashed up here and am still alive, I don’t deserve to live.” With these words the captain walked into the water and let himself drown.

“Ahhh, now that I can see and keep my eyes open long enough to look around; time to look for other survivors.” Mike started to walk towards the beach.
“Maybe if I walk along the beach I’ll find someone. Hehe I can’t believe how quickly I get lonely I mean look I’m talking out loud to myself already and by the looks of it the boat only sunk early this morning before dawn and I woke up around noon and now it is early evening. Only a few hours alone and I start talking out loud to myself. Much longer and I will go insane.”
Suddenly Mike stopped, looking out towards the vast ocean. “What is that on that boulder!!!?” Mike screamed and ran into the water.
Once he got close enough he realized it was an unconscious man. “I am not alone! I should be able to pull to shore.” Mike closed the distance between them and checked to make sure the man was alive. The man had a pulse but, was barely breathing. “He must have swallowed water I must hurry.” Mike, as quickly as possible pulled the man to shore.
Once there he starts giving mouth to mouth. Finally the man spat up a lot of water and fell into a fitful slumber. Mike plopped down next to him.
“Man do I need to get out of the office and work out more.” Mike whispered to the evening sky.
Mike turned his head slightly to look at his new companion. The man truly was a diamond in the rough. He had raven black hair, a small beard that gave the man a roguish beauty, and next to his right eye was a rugged scar. As Mike stared at the man, the man’s eyes started to open. It was just a flutter of his eye lids, but Mike sat straight up and looked down at the man. “y..yo…you bas..” The man started angrily till Mike stopped him. “shhh don’t try to talk. You almost drowned but, luckily I got to you in time.” Mike said while lightly pushing on the man’s shoulders to keep him still.
“You b*****d, I’ll ******** kill you.” the man choked out with rage in his eyes as he struggled to get up from under Mike’s hands.
“What did I do?” asked a very startled Mike. For a split second he loosened his grip from the surprise, and before he realized what was happening the man was on his feet staggering back to the water. Mike tried to stop him but, the man shouted, “I’m a failure, I want to go to the sea. Leave me alone.

Chapter 2: Life and Death

“Stop” Screamed Mike trying to make this crazy man from continuing towards the water. “What are you doing, you idiot why are you trying…” Just then the man collapsed into the sand. Mike slowly approached him weary that this might be trap so that he let down his guard. When Mike saw that the man was not getting up he knelt down. “He passed out. He must have pushed himself too hard; considering he almost drowned I’m not surprised.” Mike pulled the man up farther on the beach and sat down heavily next to him. “I need a name for you. Hmmm you look like a sailor with the cloths you have on but, you also have raven colored hair. So either I call you sailor or raven then again I can call you stupid for trying to kill yourself.” Mike just sat in the sand and stared at the man wondering what name fit his sleeping beauty more. “You will probably prefer and be use to sailor the best so I guess that’s what I’ll call you.” Mike said on a sigh. Mike got up and looked at the sky. “It’s getting late; I need something to help me to carry you back to the cave.” Mike quickly found two medium sized branches and many thick vines with which he made a simi-sturdy stretcher. Once he got Mike on it he slowly pulled him to the cave. When he got there he tied sailor to the bed. Hopefully now he wouldn’t run away and kill himself. Mike sat down against a wall and wondered why this handsome man tried to kill himself. Soon Mike’s eye lids drifted shut and Mike was in dreamland.

“Where the hell am I?” grumbled the man as he woke up. He opened his eyes and saw nothing but, darkness. Asked the man as he opened his eyes and saw nothing but, darkness and the flicker of a near by fire. “Is this hell? Am I dead?” “You are awake, and to answer your questions, this is not hell and thankfully you’re not dead. Although I can not say that it’s for lack of trying on your part. Why are you so egger to die?” “Why you ask? WHY? That ship that sunk, I was the captain, yet I didn’t die with the ship and the others on it. I tried to do the right thing and return to the sea but no you had to be a hero and save me. I’m a failure, now will you let me return to the sea?” “I was on that ship and I’m sure others survived, so is it not your duty to find the others and keep us alive?” “Fine I’ll wait until you are safe, then I’ll join the others.” “Those others you speak of are alive and we have to find them!” “Have you seen them?!” “No but, they could still be alive and on another island.” “If they are on another island there isn’t a single thing e can do about it now is there?” “No but what about the people on this island we can help them!” “I walked probably half this island and you are the only person I saw.” “Even so there’s another half of the island maybe there is someone there” “Don’t you think we would have seen them already?” “Maybe they are going in the opposite direction or maybe they are hurt!” “You’re very optimistic, for being stranded. Are you a masochist?” “WHAT? No of course not I’m just happy that I’m alive and not alone.” “Well don’t be. Just because I have to keep you safe, doesn’t mean I’m going to be nice and lovey-dovey.” “Yeah but still I’m not alone.” “Geez there’s no bringing you down is there?” “I have nothing to be upset about.” “You’re ******** up if you believe that.” “Maybe, what is your name?” “What’s it to you?” “Fine, I’ll just call you sailor.” “I’m a captain not a lowly sailor.” “So what is your name?” “Call me Fracaso.” “Is that your name?” “No, it’s Spanish.” “What does it mean?” “Failure.” “I’m not calling you that, sailor.” “Fine my name is Mártir.” “Is that Spanish.” “Sí.” “What does it mean?” “Nada de tu asunto.” “Huh?” “None of your business.” “Does it have to do with being a Martyr? Because that is what it sounds like.” “Nada de tu asunto.” “Urg fine I’m going to get more wood please promise me you will be here when I get back.” “Whatever.” “promise me.” “Why.” “You won’t break a promise.” “FINE, I PROMISE. Happy?” “Yes, very.” Mike got up and left in search of wood. Mártir just sat inside the cave and fell asleep.

Chapter 3: Others and Happiness

“Captain Mártir you have to wake up!!!” Mike said as he lightly shook the captain.
“What the ******** do you want now?” Mártir asked sleepily.
“I found someone else from the ship and I need your help.”
“Why?”
“She is unconscious so I need help getting her here.”
“You got me here.”
“Barely and there’s more.”
“Huh?”
“Just come please.”
“Fine where is she?”
“This way.” Mike led the way to the beach and walks towards the woman. The woman had long flowing golden hair that was now matted and knotted with seaweed sticking out every which way. Against her bosom was a small toddler, which was also unconscious.
“They still alive?” asked Mártir his voice overflowing with doubt.
“Yes, can you take the lady and I’ll take the baby?”
“How’s the squirt even alive?”
“It looks like the mother put him on a piece of wreckage and drifted here with him.” The men started pulling the woman and carrying the toddler back to the cave.
Once they got inside Mike took off the boy’s wet cloths and wrapped him in some cloths from the suitcase. Mártir did the same for the woman and then said, “She’s hypothermic.”
“Hopefully the dry cloths and fire will help.”
“Doubt it she’s to far gone.” The two men just sat staring at the almost lifeless bodies before them. Mike got up and grabbed the suitcase. Mártir just sat there and stared him with a puzzled look on his face. As he watched Mike dumped out the contents of the suitcase into a pile in the corner of the cave and placed the toddler in it. Then without a word both men laid down and went to sleep.
The next morning Mártir was sitting staring at the fire as Mike woke up. “How are they?” were the first words out of Mike’s mouth.
“She’s dead, the baby is still alive but for how long I don’t know.”
“Did she wake up?”
“Once all she said was Alex.”
“The boy’s name?”
“Maybe or a lover or her husband or anyone else.”
“I’ll get more wood and food can you stay here and watch Alex?”
“Whatever.” Mike went back to where he found the fruit last time and gathered more. After he dropped off the fruit back at the cave he went out to get some wood. AS he reached the cave he saw Mártir pulling the woman back to the beach.
“What are you doing?!” Mike screamed.
“What you want to leave her to rot and draw animals to your cave?”
“No, but we should bury her.”
“You got a shovel?” The captain said well continuing to pull the woman away from the cave. Mike went back to the cave and threw down the wood. Then as he was pacing and mumbling, he heard the most miraculous sound. Alex was crying. Mike ran to the suitcase and lifted the toddler out; cuddling him so close that the crying reached an ear splitting volume. Mike set the boy back in the suitcase and then slumped against a wall and started to cry. This is when Mártir returned.
“What is the kid dead to cause if he is you can carry him to the beach I’m tired.” Mike got up and threw himself at the captain almost knocking the two men over.
“He cried, Alex cried! He’s going to live!” Mike said excitedly as he hugged Mártir tightly.
“That’s nice; now get the ******** OFF ME.” Mike let go but, continued to shuffle with excitement.
Finally after standing and staring at Mike, Mártir said “I’m going to get some water and fish.”
“Ok just make sure you’re back before dark.”
At this Mártir grumbled saying “What am I your freaking husband?”
“Huh?”
The Captain didn’t even bother with a response he walked out into the woods searching for fresh water and fine vines or something similar to make a fishing net.

Finally Mártir found a small pond so he filled the empty water bottles and then continued to collect vines. By the time he got back his legs felt like jelly and the sky was turning pink. As he walked in he saw Alex Sleeping in the suitcase. Then he saw a cold shivering, Mike, he was curled in a ball next to a cold fire pit. Mike had wrapped the jacket that he was supposed to use as a blanket around Alex. “Idiota you’re going to freeze to death.” whispered Mártir. He stood standing and trying to figure out what to do. Then after a minute or two he sighed and grabbed the jacket that was his blanket. Mártir used it to cover both of them. Mike shifted backwards and cuddled close to the new warmth. Then while spooning himself against Mike, Mártir whispered “don’t get comfortable, this is a one time thing.” Then both men fell asleep.
The next morning when the men woke up they were in an intimate position. Mike was laying half way on top of Mártir with his leg in between the other man’s and his hand resting on top of Mártir’s heart. Both men were smiling until they realized who they were sleeping with, then they practically jumped apart.

Chapter 4: Tragedy Strikes like a Snake

“I will um, just um, go… go feed Alex; yeah that’s what I’ll do.” Mike stammered.
Mártir just stood up and went to rekindle the fire. “Hmm we need more wood for later. Be right back.”
“Wait you need to make net so I’ll go.”
“That’s true, ok.”
So Mike got up and went to find more wood.

“Where the ******** is Mike?” Mártir mumbled as he paced the cave. It had been hours since Mike had left. Mártir had already finished the net and feed Alex twice. The captain decided that he had had enough waiting. He grabbed a shirt and used it to tie Alex to him in a sling fashion. “Man your heavy how old are you?” “twooo” “You can freakin’ talk?” Alex just stared at the captain and started to suck his thumb. With a sigh from Mártir the two set out. They went and looked for any signs of Mike and called out his name until Mártir was almost hoarse from yelling and yet they continued. Then Mártir so lost in looking for Mike stumbled. When he looked down he saw that it was Mike’s arm. He moved the brush next to him and saw Mike sleeping against a tree. “Mike wake up.” “WAKE UP!” Mártir shook Mike and still Mike lay as still as a dead man. The captain let Alex sit down on the ground as he looked for what happened to Mike. Then he saw it on the same arm he had tripped on was a snake bit. Mike had used his belt to try and stop the venom from spreading; it might have saved his life. The bite was swollen and still lightly bleeding. Mártir checked Mike’s pulse and breathing, his pulse was slow and his breathing labored. Mártir cut open the bite so it bled freely. Then he looked around until he found what he was looking for. He quickly grabbed the plant, chewed it, and placed it on the bite. “This should help.”
“Come on Alex we’re heading back.” Mártir used the shirt to once again tie Alex to him. Then he picked up Mike and headed back to the cave.
When they got back to the cave Mártir gently laid Mike down and then put Alex in the suitcase. With in minutes Alex was fast asleep. Mártir went over to Mike; he gently cradled Mike in his lap and tried to keep the bitten arm elevated. He slowly rocked back and forth. “Don’t die on me, idiot. You’re the one who said that I had to stay alive to look for others, yet you think that you can die, I don’t think so. If you die who will make sure that I leave Alex all alone like my father did with me.”

What is going on? Everything feels cold and fuzzy and my arm is throbbing. “If you die who will make sure that I leave Alex all alone like my father did with me.” That’s Mártir’s voice. I want to tell not to worry I won’t die and if I do I trust him to watch Alex. What does he mean about his father? Why does my tongue feel so big, why can’t I speak? Mártir I’m scared.

The captain used the same jacket as the night before to wrap them both in as he laid down. “This wasn’t supposed to happen again but you had to get bitten by a snake.” The only response that came from the limp body in front of him was labored breathing. “Don’t die.” Mártir whispered as he slowly drifted to sleep.
In the morning the captain woke up and found that sometime in the night he had spooned himself against Mike. “Hey wake up”. Even with Mártir shaking him Mike never even batted an eyelash. The captain checked and even though Mike’s pulse and breathing had improved his temperature had sky-rocketed. “s**t, we need to cool you down and now!” Mártir tied a disgruntled Alex to him and then carried Mike to the beach. Once there he found some vines and tied Alex to a tree, like a dog on a leash. “Sorry kid but, I can’t hold both you and Mike up in the water.” Mártir took some fruit peeled it and put in a cracked coconut and placed near Alex. Then he stripped Mike and himself of all there cloths and placed them on the beach out of the high tide’s reach. Then he slowly walked into the water while carrying Mike’s limp body. Once they were deep enough he lowered them down so that he was sitting in the water up to his shoulders and placed Mike in his lap facing the shore so he could watch Alex.
