another portrait done within photoshop. they're good if you want to focus more on layer effects and the like and you just want something to work with. reference picture used (i took it myself).

the texture is the same as the one i used for the maleficent piece. i wanted to make it somber looking as a reflection on the type of music he produces:

All done in photoshop w/photo ref. I've been waning on workload since I was doing freelance for awhile over at Technicolor's new video game division. So I did this as a warm up to get the ball rolling again in terms of completing personal projects. I wanted to practice on painting along with color choices, and also branching out onto the subtleties of using layer effects in my pieces. I normally just copy my flattened piece and then do a gaussian blur and put the layer into overlay as my final post effect and call it done...but I did more than just that with this piece. It was a nice moderate project to do before I go back into my usual stuffs.

This makes me very happy. I like both of these pics a lot.

I have nothing constructive to add.

I have nothing constructive either. I just had to say I LOVE the texture you accomplished in that portrait, however you managed to do it. It looks very real-media.

it''s real easy to make your own texture like that. since my bf does a lot of 3d modeling i tend to borrow his textures, especially concrete + cement + wall textures. ones that have a good overall feel to them and has enough textury bits to make it look interesting. you can either google up free textures online or if you''ve got a digital camera handy you can go out and take your own. cloudy days are the best days to take those kind of pictures because the shadows are diffused enough so you can get an overall texture. then you can bring them into photoshop and adjust the levels to give it more contrast. then you can drag that image on top of the piece your working on and turn that texture layer into overlay. if you want added control you can quickly throw a mask on that layer and then you can erase the areas you don''t want the texture to show (i had a soft brush on 20% that i used on his face so the texture wouldn''t show as much).

thanks for the comments, although on the whole i don''t find these kinda pieces very rewarding. they''re good if you want to practice coloring, layer effects, and face studies...otherwise they''re pretty boring to do.
