..//The Discovery//..
Ambling around the dark room Kris stood near the shaded window and pulled at the loose string to unravel the blinds, shedding some early morning sunlight into the unforgiving darkness that captured her bedroom. It was darn near nine in the morning already, Aoshi wasn’t anywhere near awake and even herself hadn’t managed to get up until just a few minutes before. The young woman shook her head flipping it a few times in order to get her frizzy mess of hair to settle. Once that was done she moved on to getting a well needed shower, on a cool autumn day such as the one they were having today she fully planned to indulge upon her partner’s lack of motivation. After all, the early bird catches the worm, or in this case the earliest riser gets the hottest and longest shower. Her hair touched just below her shoulders as the young woman’s slender body shed the night clothes and hopped into the heated shower, steam rose to the ceiling as she began humming and closed her eyes as shampoo slid down her cheeks.
“…What you feel is what you are and what you are is beautiful…”
Kris laughed as the song floated from within her lips. It was just the night before that the two of them, Aoshi and her had had a rather harsh argument and she had climbed onto their bed and popped her Ipod earphones in, rocking out to many such bands. None the less last night hadn’t been the best of bests since they had arrived in this rural area, it hit home every once and a while that Kris really wasn’t in her ‘natural environment’, but humans were supposed to be adaptable right? Right, she could do this. She had always wanted to get away from the city life or more importantly the gang life. However it had just now become a reality and reality was setting in fast that for the bulk of her life she’d always had something to do, someone to inform or hurt and now, there was nothing. On the positive spin, there was no more need for her to look behind her awaiting the next bullet in her side or slash to the ankles, and yet, the violence is what she thrived on.
Pulling a towel around her Kris stood for a moment, staring into the foggy glass mirror above their grayish white sink. There wasn’t anything she could see, but the staring was more of a time to which she could wander back inside her own mind to find some cause to have a adventure today. It was that sort of day; something she was wanting was some sort of moment, something that made time stop even if just for a split second.
“Yeah, like that’ll happen around here…”
She muttered softly in an undertone as she exited the bathroom to find some clothes. Her wardrobe consisted of mostly cheap jeans, t-shirts and tanks and a few pairs of shorts and hoodies, nothing fancy or new. Fiddling with the hangers they had for their jackets Kris pulled off a white sweatshirt to put over her black and red t-shirt and the dark navy blue jeans she had put on. A plain outfit for a plain neighborhood and another plain day, everything around here seemed plain, it was simply unimaginable that such a place was able to co exist with cities.
“Hun? Aoshi?”
Kris bent over the side of the bed and nudged the sleeping man gently, attempting to wake him, of course to no avail. No, he was out somewhere in his mind dreaming of god only knew what. Laughing she tried to stir him again, this time by shaking him just a little. Once more, he simply rolled to the other side and began a full on sleep again.
“Alright then, you’re in for it.”
Taking a few steps back the she ran forwards and lept onto the soft bed, right ontop of the man. He of course woke up, startled and jumped to the side damn near falling off. His brown eyes wide with shock he shook his head whilst trying to pull himself together.
“Morning?”
In a half yawn Aoshi motioned to Kris to sit by him, patting lightly on the bedcover.
“Naw, I’m going to go see about taking a jog. Maybe even to the park or the library or somethin’, catch you later. Love ya.”
He smiled, nodding happily and decided to roll back over. Kris on the other hand shrugged and rolled her eyes as she shut the bedroom door. It had now crept upon 11 am and the sun blared in the most uncomfortable way imaginable to one’s eyes. Squinting her eyes the slender woman toddled down the old creaking wooden steps and out the front door. It was a old painted door, you could easily tell so by the simple fact the white paint was chipping and thus leaving a grey brown coloration on parts of it. Looking around her to the best of her ability in the light Kris took off in a steady jog down the sidewalk and off onto a side road. It wasn’t nearly as busy as anywhere she’d ever been to and to focus her attention on reality she had to keep her eyes wandering, noticing anything and everything she possibly could.
‘Red, Blue, Green, Gray, Black, Black, White…mailboxes. Green, Brown, Green, Green…lawns. Blue, White, Yellow, Blue, Black, Gray, White, White…houses.’
Kris noted in her mind, counting and labeling as she continued her jog. However, as she was about to round another corner she got a cramp in her lower leg. She hadn’t gotten too far from the apartment and all ready she felt completely out of shape. Sighing heavily she stopped, debating whether or not to return early or continue forwards. It wasn’t however, a large cramp, easily worked out with a few more minutes than normal of workout. With that she had chosen to continue and picked up jogging this time, turning onto another side street with a little more activity. Cars winged past her and her level of focus simmered down, that was, until out of the corner of her eye she noticed a bench. It was a fair day but she’d been jogging now for nearly a full 30 minutes and needed, well, wanted a break. Promptly moving towards the mostly wooden and partly metal object she realized there was something strange lying on the side.
When she finally got closer it appeared to be a scroll, old and somewhat ridden with dirt or dust it bore no name to show ownership or have anyone around for that matter. Anyone that had life to them were bustling by in cars, certainly not jogging or walking around where she was, there after all, was nothing to do around there. Lifting one eyebrow in interest she peeked in the nearby container it was laying partly out of, nothing filled this black void, not right now at least. Being of a curious natured individual Kris tilted the scroll back into its container and picked it up, eyeing cautiously around her as to not be yelled at for stealing. Since there was no clear appearance of an owner she took it with her, continuing to jog now with a small scroll in her left hand.
“Hey, Aoshi! Look what I found! Some old scroll thing, might even be worth some money later. Come ‘ir and take a look!”
Yelling from the apartment’s staircase Kris got back an hour later than usual to the complex. Of course she was fully assuming her boyfriend was awake, but after listening to response telling her to join him upstairs for some lunch she paced herself as the young woman came to the top of the stairs and then down the hallway to her apartment door. Twisting the knob loosely and then nudging the door it swung open smoothly and she entered, letting the door self-close behind her with a ‘clinking’ noise as it shut together.
