[Détente, a.k.a. 'We can't get rid of the nukes, so we'll get rid of the nuke launchers]
A quest for Détente.

Well, come in. Sit down, have a cup of tea? Or is that too presumptuous? After all, we are at war. Having tea with your enemy, no matter the peace-time arrangement may be considered rude.

Ah, I see you've accepted my offer. Good show, sah. Now, welcome to my quest thread. It's a place to refine, argue, clarify and make better this brilliant idea of mine. Always under construction, this thread is, so just remind yourself of that as the pace changes and content is altered.

Be sure to drop a line if you feel the need to add something, or think I'm infringing. Anything really, I'm a bit of a feedback whore.

"The Cold War was not a monumental conflict, but rather a series of waves, the crests of were tension and the troughs, détente." - Ian Grimmer.

The Cold War was a period of both tension and competition between the United States and the Soviet Union that started during the 1940s and continued on to the 1990s. Throughout the period, the rivalry between the two superpowers was played out in multiple arenas: military coalitions; ideology, psychology, and espionage; military, industrial, and technological developments, including the space race; costly defense spending; a massive conventional and nuclear arms race; and many proxy wars.

The Cold War drew to a close in the late 1980s following the launching of Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev's reform programs, perestroika and glasnost. The Soviet Union consequently ceded power over Eastern Europe and was dissolved in 1991.

Détente is a French term that means a relaxation or an easing of tension; the term has been utilized on the world stage since the early Seventies. Generally, it may be applied to any international situation where previously hostile nations not involved in an open war "warm up" to each other and threats de-escalate. However, it is primarily used in reference to the general reduction in the tension between the Soviet Union and the United States and a thawing of the Cold War, occurring from the late 1960s until the start of the 1980s.

“It’s like this, your side doesn’t have it; our side doesn’t have it. No one wins, no one loses.” – James Bond.

Name: Percival Mikhail Chase Cypress – Named ‘Percival’ because it seemed like a good idea to Erasin at the time. The child simply would not leave her alone, affecting almost every aspect of her life until she agreed to take him in. Since Percival sounded a lot like ‘persistent’ which is the only real word to describe the child’s actions, Erasin chose to call him that. He, however, calls himself Mikhail because it is a good name and because he knows the power behind it. Chase comes from… Chao being Chao and insisting that Erasin give the child a family name. (Chase is the name of Erasin’s pet rat, which was, incidentally, named for a rather pretty Australian.)

Spirit: The Cold War Détente

Gender: Male

Eyes: Brown with slight flecks of gold in them that seem to glow whenever he reaches a certain level of annoyance. They are slightly watery, and constantly in motion, looking around for potential threats to his newfound sense of security.

Skin: A reddish colour that could or could not be the color of the rust that characterizes the ruins of factories that could not support the rapid industrialization plans of the Early Soviet Union. He is the colour of the weapons of war, disused and left to decay in silos all across these two nations. His cheeks are slightly ashen in colour, as if he’s spent a long time hiding underground, out of the sunlight and has only just come out and into the sun.

Hair: A deep crimson. It sticks up a bit on the top but is kept functionally short. Long hair distracts from the matter at hand, and besides, it would look bad under his hat.

Stature: Mikhail is very long in most aspects of his being. Long legs, long arms, exceptionally large ears (think Bush Senior or something equally traumatizing). Despite his length, however, he’s of the stocky sort of body type, and is quite solid when run into.

Markings: Has a large birthmark on his forehead, on the left hand side. While it appears blotchy, it stands out against his skin looking to some like the American eagle, or the Soviet hammer and sickle, depending on the angle.

Dress: Mikhail dresses like a sudden meeting of two very different cultures. He wears a traditional Russian tunic over faded (and most likely black market) jeans. On his head he wears a Soviet army cap with an American flag patch sewn onto it. Unfortunately, everything about him clashes rather awfully, like the two cultures that the period of Détente attempted to bring closer together.

Personality: He’s quiet by nature, but has an explosive temper if he’s ever pushed that far. Mikhail is very obedient, but he often harbors deeper, more deviant thoughts. Like the spirit of the times, he’s not afraid to voice his conviction, but he knows that words sometimes have consequences.

He’s very friendly and loves to be around new people and ideas. He’s critical of these new ideas, however; citing how they would ruin his life if they were ever put into place where he lives. While he’s critical of what he hears, he’ll take almost anything to heart – changing it into something that would make a Post Modernist thinker roll over in his or her grave. Everything for Mikhail falls into the great meta-narrative that is his life. He’s used to not hearing things truthfully, but from hearing them the way that he’s been told.

He rebels against the norms because of this.

Mikhail loves to be learning new things. He has a thirst for knowledge because he knows that he has to be smarter than the other guy. He’s quite skilled with technology and loves to build things. Erasin is never really sure what to do with him, but he’s a good kid and, although slightly pushy at times.

Quirks: Lays… eggs (which may or may not have something to do with too much time repressing his sentiments about religion). Loves to mess with people, to push people almost to the point of breaking, can be quite snarky. Reads far too much. Has a hidden love for books about suffering with happy endings. Loves Soap Operas. Collects screws and bolts he finds on the street. Is slightly neurotic about the way his shoes are tied. Listens to rock and roll too loudly. Has a strange love of the Czech Velvet Revolver cover band, The Plastic People of the Universe and thinks that they are being unjustly censored by the Czech government. Idolizes Gorbachev, even though Gorby never intended for all this crazy stuff to happen.

Likes: Reading, math problems, logic puzzles, Plastic People of the Universe, The Beatles. American Jeans. McDonald’s cheese burgers (even though Erasin’s made him read Fast Food Nation). Spies and Secret Agents

Dislikes: Your Mom Jokes. Writing Essays. Having to respond logically to what he’s been told. Bombs. Outer space.

"He is not fine, he is stuck in a window." - Shoebox Project.

Name ..... Erasin Cypress

Age ...... not available at this time.

Background .....

Erasin is from a small island somewhere in the sea north of the island of Gambino. She now lives in Dur’em, working at a bookshop that collects eccentricities and is really a simple financial drain on its owners. Most of their business comes from the seasonal tourists that blow through Dur’em two times a year or so.

Erasin’s family was Greek, but it’s been such a long time since Erasin was home that she simple counts herself amongst the Gaians she lives with. It’s easier that way. Besides, her family and home life were just a few steps short of bizarre that Erasin tries not to think too hard about what the oddities of her family have done to her already fragile psyche.

Erasin lives in an apartment that she can’t afford with three rooms that are all connected and have no doors and even less privacy. She likes it there, but it could just be her; most other people don’t.

I thought you'd appreciate my keeping that rather crack-like moment of you in the character.

I truly love your concept, wifey! Mikhail is particularly amusing, I think that Pai-face and he would get along quite rockily. :3
