Here I come again with my threads about angels! Well, it was suggested to me that I make my own thread in which I could post the things that I have learned about angels, mainly so I could stop sidetracking every other topic I post on redface , so here it is! If on any other topic I feel the need to begin rambling about angels, I will direct you kind folks here. Now.... on with it!
This is still in progress, so it is obviously missing some elements, but it has to start somewhere. Maybe it should begin with a basic table of contents!
1. Introduction 2. About the Angels 3. FAQ 4. Methods and Dealings with the Celestial Host 5. Texts, Passages, and Suggested Reading 6. My Story 7. Avlafran's Window

1. Introduction
I've been studying angels for some time now. You could call it a hobby, you could call it an obsession... neither is really accurate. I feel it's more of a calling. Don't ask why, maybe it will make more sense over time. What I'm getting at is... I have read a lot about angels! And what occult guild would be complete without a thorough commentary on these mighty creatures?

2. About the Angels
One of the things I'd like to do here is clear up some of the misconceptions about angels. I cannot tell you how tired I get of "New Age angels". You know the ones I'm talking about... the ones on the covers of Silver Ravenwolf books that are all women with pink wings. stare Sorry if that offends anyone, but the angels used to be so much different. What happened? Anyway, here are some facts.
1 - Angels have existed in some form in almost every culture, and their history in these cultures predates written knowledge. Angels have been around for as long as we know. Winged spirits and servants of God have been around for thousands of years. If Christianity would like to claim the angels as their own, they'd better be ready to stand in line behind about a thousand other spiritualities.
2 - Angels are not cute little infants with wings and harps! Up until some painter decided to turn them into such, they were definately fully grown adult figures. Even in the Bible, an angel never appeared as a little kid. And think about it really. It doesn't make any sense. I see all kinds of people with guardian angel broaches that are cherubs. Why? Why would you want to imagine a protective spirit like that? "Step back! Or my guardian winged baby will giggle you to death!"
?!?!
3 - Contrary to newer pictures, most angels were seen as male. The Enochian communications is the only place that I can really think of where many of the angels were also female. But even then, the ones that did most of the talking were male, with the exception of an angel named Madimi. In my opinion, most angels were probably viewed as male in most biblical texts and some other texts because... well, EVERYONE who was important had to be a man back then.
4 - Angels are definately not here to serve us. A lot of people are under the impression that they are practically waiting on us hand and foot, ready to care for us in any way possible. I've read so many things, and that just simply isn't true. Many angels do NOT love us. Some of them don't even LIKE us. An angel could choose to guard and protect a certain person if they were fond of them, but I have never seen any proof to think that they are "assigned" to anyone or forced to watch over them. In the Bible, angels are constantly quick-tempered towards humans. In one instance, Gabriel renders someone blind for years just for second guessing him. In Gnosticism there are the Archons, the angelic rulers of the spheres of heaven, which are incredibly feared. When ascending the 7 levels of heaven on the way to meet God, one takes specific amulets and magickal words just to fend off the wrathful archons. The most famous example of this that comes to mind though, is the Enochian angels, who used two human men, John Dee and Edward Kelley, to convey their own complex magickal system with no care for anything but their agenda. It is interesting to read the communications between the two men and the angels because in them you will see the angels taking advantage of the men countless times, playing on their weaknesses and beliefs, indulging in their superiority, threatening them, DEFINATELY playing games for their own amusement, and finally never even allowing them to use the magickal system that they labored so hard to coordinate for them. I can tell you just from reading the conversations and also reading some information about John Dee that the angels took advantage of them because they knew that they could. Funny enough, this made me like the angels even more. Cunning creatures they are. And to top all of it off, the system that they conveyed to Dee and Kelley was meant to be the catalyst that starts the Apocalypse! I'll get into much of the Enochian material later, but for now, I think I've sufficiently proven that angels may not like us. smile
5 - But along with the idea of "not all angels are sugar and spice" comes the fact that not all of them are the same in personality at all! Many people guess that all angels are gentle and nice and sweet. Angels are like people. One cannot assume that all people are kind and giving, nor can one assume that all people are greedy and selfish. The same is true for angels. Some are mild mannered, some are explosive, some are charismatic, some are mean, the list goes on and on. But because they have lived for thousands of years, you can bet they are probably more interesting than the random PEOPLE you might meet. xd
More to come later!

3. FAQ
*opens a letter and reads aloud to the class* Dear Loagaeth...
1. Are angels little naked babies with wings?
NO!!! Go up above and do your homework! I already covered this! Don't be fooled by those Hallmark cards! In written angel encounters, they have ALWAYS been described as adults, and usually male. An interesting note though, is that in the Enochian communications, some of them did not show up as adult males. It was as though there was a whole community of them, just like us. The best example I can think of is when the angels told John Dee and Edward Kelley about the Sigillum de Aemeth, which would become the most famous of the Enochian seals and also one of Dee's most prized posessions. Of course, the angels couldn't just tell them where things went, they actually put on a whole theatrical performance for them, in which each angel that was named on the Sigillum (which there were quite a few of them) showed up to represent themselves. And some of the angels were powerful male ones, some were young women, and some were little girls and little boys. So, not all angels have always been adults... but they have never been cutesy little infants!
2. Do you think angels are sexy?
I have mixed feelings on that. Angels don't really have real physical forms... atleast the forms they let us see are not what they really look like, so attraction based on looks is a little complicated. I certainly know that they have everything going for them to BE sexy. First of all, they have always been said to come in the form of the most beautiful, immaculate human being one has ever seen, radiant and awe-inspiring. They also have wings, and are not human. Many texts have given them the feel of being forbidden to us, atleast sexually they have DEFINATELY come off as forbidden (the Book of Enoch). Great pains seem to have been made to draw a line between us and them, and you know what they say... everyone wants what they can't have. Also, the pure destructive power of the angels is amazing, and they rule basically everything from the weather to the planets to other lower spirits, coming in second only to the universe/God itself. They are cunning, fiercely intelligent, complex, mischievious, sometimes diabolical, and always enigmatic. Though they may never be sexy in a runway model kind of way, they are attractive in a much better and deeper way in my opinion.
3. Would YOU have sex with an angel?
Probably not. Didn't you hear what happened in the Book of Enoch to the people who did that? xd In all seriousness though, I think that the angels are "sexy" to an extent, but I have a hell of a lot of respect for them. I consider the fact that they probably don't look at me like a future prospect, so I don't look at them that way! I DO look forward to working with them in a diplomatic way though!
4. Do angels really have wings?
I don't really know. Honestly, I don't think the angels really HAD wings in most of the texts, they just started having them when painters drew them to distinguish them from human beings. There have been some references in the Bible where the angels had wings, but many times they showed up without them. In the Enochian communications, none of the angels had wings, they just looked like absolutely beautiful human beings. An angel wouldn't really NEED wings, it's not like they have to physically fly from place to place. But hell, I draw angels with wings. Whether they have them or not, let's face it, it looks cool and it sortof gives them that essence of magick and mystery that they have. Plus, they are associated with the sky, so it makes sense that way too. I will say my final answer is that angels have the ability to have wings, but they do not need them and do not always come in a form where they show them.
5. Have you ever seen an angel?
First, I want to debunk a little myth. When doing angel rituals, the angel does not just appear before you, hovering above the altar. Many people have this misunderstanding. I've read about lots of instances where a person has said that their angel communication didn't work, even though all the small things during the ritual implied that the being was indeed present. Candles flickering is a big one, also things falling off of the altar may indicate that the angel doesn't like something, etc. If you have some kind of method of actually seeing the angel, such as incorporating a mirror, scrying bowl, crystal ball, etc, you may see one, but they don't just appear there. Now, back to the question... yes, I have seen them. Atleast one. It has not been in front of me, it was in some dreams, but it was him, so I have seen the angel in question. Other situations have happened to me, but I am not clear on whether that was an angel or something else, so I can't say for those instances.
6. What does your name mean?
I get this question a lot actually! "Loagaeth" is an Enochian word that means "words of God" or "speech from God". It is also part of the name for one of John Dee's Enochian books that the angels asked him to make, called "Liber Loagaeth". It's always been my favorite word from their language. Of course you can bet that it isn't my REAL name, but how many parents are there that would be cool enough to name their kids after a word from an occult language?
7. Loagaeth, why are you so obsessed with angels?
Because the angels are the cream of the crop! Before angels were made fluffy and pretty and no one who was "hardcore" would deal with them, they were a sought after commodity! In the times of the medieval grimoires, contact with angels was the main focus of the workings. They figured, why go ask a faerie or an elemental to do something for you when you can just ask an angel to make multiple spirits do things for you? The angels were in control of everything. If you befriended an angel, then you befriended everything that angel was in control of, and that was usually a lot. If you look at the abilities that the angels of the Watchtowers have in the Enochian system, you'll wonder why anyone would NOT want to be friends with the angels. They boast of abilities to heal any sickness, turn coal into diamonds, they can tell you everything past, present, and future, they know every secret of men, they have knowledge of any elemental or spirit and their uses, they can help with astral travel, and so much more. Beyond the fact that I would have to be crazy to deny how useful they are though, I just like them and respect them. Mainly I am fond of the angels because of what they are. Just like how you would like a person for a certain way that they are.
8. Does that mean that you hate demons?
Of course not. I have a friend that couldn't understand that. I don't really see a lot of difference between angels and demons, just their disposition and their duties. Demons are generally in control of more "unkind" types of magick though, which I don't really use much, so that is why I lean towards angels more. Of course angels have done some "unkind" things before too, but they generally represent enlightenment, which is important to me. I respect demons though, and I have no doubt that at some point I will work with them.
9. Do you believe that if an angel and a human had sex, they could have a baby together?
I don't know about all that. In the Book of Enoch it says that they did have offspring, but that could have been a symbolic representation. Besides, their children were carnivorous giants that ate people and destroyed everything, so... we probably wouldn't want that anyway. sweatdrop I think that the union of angels and humans would impregnate the human with promise of divine wisdom and enlightenment. Just as the union of humans and angels is not physical to me, neither are the results.
