thirty whacks

PostPosted: Mon May 14, 2007 6:01 pm

Hey.. this is something I drew in my sparetime between classes over the past week, and I was just wondering if you guys think the crosshatching looks a little.. blotchy for lack of a better word. Yes, the deviantart account it's coming from is mine. sorry if the image doesn't work, I suck with computers. You figure by the time I turned 15 i'd have them figured out but nooo. xD

anywho, I knows its sketchy. And the face; it looks disorted, but I just can't place why. I know the anatomy is awkward, and I need help with that too, and I know the nose is.. interesting looking. xD please just give an honest opinion, be brash if you must. I'm sick of hearing the same old thing and need to know the truth about my drawings; and if i'm good for my age or if i'm horrible and should be locked in a closet.

Mmm, I like that a lot. 3nodding

I think your cross-hatching is sexy, you added a lot of variety to it, looks great. The face looks a bit distorted, it's because your center is off to the left (our right)-- I wouldn't change it though, I think it adds to the picture. The only thing I think could be improved on is that wiggly-thing in the top left hand corner, it sort of just looks like space filler. o:

the issues arent with your cross hatching. That looks mad cool

but you seem to not be very familiar with the structure of things like the face or the torso.

the arm seems the right length but the torso is like exxtremely long and the face just lacks structure.

It lacks a skull or cheekbones or a jawline and is just an oval with features slapped on it
so I would brush up on some anatomy, especially facial anatomy

and trust me, babe.
Age has nothing to do with it.

I'm no member either, but I'm a master of artful critique, and thus can assist you with your queries, one at a time.

Sketchiness = Irrelevant. Let the line work speaketh!

Awkward anatomy = only if you want it to be awkward. In this case it fits the overall mood of the piece.

The nose is fine.

The head, as you mentioned, looks distorted. It is not: It's an optical illusion. I blame the hair. On the character's right side (Our left). It doesn't "curve" naturally, it doesn't "wrap" around the scalp. If you want to, you can add a bit of volume to the hair there to balance it out.

You have a good eye for crosshatching. I congratulate you on that.

Overall, it's SPIFFY.

Superb line quality, the only think that really needs help is obviously your figure drawing. However, they way you are currently stylizing the figure is also very nice..just needs some fine tuning.

you seem like you might be inspired from tranceorange's work on deviant art, so check it out. I think it's cool anyway. Makes me want to try some cut paper stuff RLY bad.

I would say the crosshatching was a poor choice, yes. The picture looks really great until you scroll down and notice the super-long torso and the awkward, messy cross-hatching. Bad cross-hatching has ruined many of my drawings.

love the background, and your style has great potential.
the head is too long and skinny, it should be more round.
you should work on facial anatomy, i think.

that is AMAZING. i've played with that kind of concept before, you pulled it off very well. also i love the patterns in the background.
the face is a bit weird, like they said, it's too long and looks lopsided because of where the eye is. you have a great style, just do more anatomy studies on the places they need work - like the face and the torso.

First, I want to say that the sketch is pretty cool, conceptually. Also, I want to point out that Imageshack is a good source for you to directly link to images.

I like the crosshatching a lot, actually. The crosshatching at the bottom looks like it could use a little more work, though. It seems pretty messy.

The face, though, looks distorted because of the hair. The eye has nothing to do with it.

I outlined the head so that you can more easily see how the hair sitting squarely on top of the head when the head is at an angle.
I think the nose is fine, for the art style.
The forearm is pretty short. You may want to change the angle so that the arm isn't sticking out at the sides, but falls more alongside the character's body. As it is, the elbow looks like it's sticking straight out, away from the body.

Something like that, with more shading. All of these are drawn with my mouse, so they're not PERFECT, but they portray the idea.

The torso is very long, which makes me think that, like the nose and face, it's part of the style of the piece and should not be changed.
