It's a question for any of those who've read the book.

In Chapter 5, Erik usually requests Madame Giry to bring him a footstool to Box 5.
"Evidently, the footstool he asked for was for his lady and not for him. As for her, I never saw nor heard her."

Is he pretending to have a lady companion or was Erik pimping it out with/before Christine?

I think he probably brought Christine to those operas, but then again...*shrugs*

That's debateable, really, whether or not it is Christine or another woman. Though with Christine being in the chorus, I doubt it was her. Every performer was used in every opera, even the ballerinas and chorus girls.

Now whether or not he had a companion is still up for discussion. I doubt he had a prostitute with him, though. I suppose the stool was for himself or just used as an illusion to make it seem like he had a companion. Course then there's the thing about the fan left behind once that Mme Giry also mentions.

That's true...but what about the time of her disappearance? I can't remember if anyone noticed that she was missing. GWAHHH *goes to read book again*

Yeah...I doubt Erik would bring a prostitute. Another woman kinda sounds like Mary Sue inspiration. xp

The truth? Erik is a transvestite. No, no, I kid...

But isn't the 'lady in box five' from before Christine was abducted? That's what I always thought, as Mme. Giry seems to be speaking about something that's been going on for a long time. There's one theory floating around that Erik was actually married during the course of the novel, but there's not much to back it up.

It's not all that implausible that Erik could invent a companion the way kids have imaginary friends; he already seems to have built his 'Siren' up into a sentient entity (one that he can conveniently blame his murders on), so why not go one step further and pretend he has a wife or that he can take to the opera with him?

Or, perhaps it was a clever ruse to get Giry to keep coming back to the box so she'd eventually take the bank notes? After all, Erik usually was one step ahead of the managers. Then again, the managers aren't exactly that smart to begin with...

No, I believe it was more for Erik to put on a ruse of normalcy for himself. It was rare that anyone went to the Opera alone. That was like going to Prom alone, it just didn't really happen. So, despite his ruse as a ghost, he most likely created a lady friend and pretended to have one so it would seem that even he had a companion.

LE GASP! I knew it all along!
xd No wonder Erik has many mood swings...

Wow Fox, I never would've thought of that!
An imaginary wife seems more of a reasonable answer than having been married. If Erik were married, he wouldn't have been acting like he's been starved of affection most of his life (like when he admitted to Daroga that Christine kissed him on the forehead).
