My girlfriend dressed as Rikku once. It was nice, yet not perfect. That wasn't the point anyway. We got bright pearls to her hair and just messed it up. She has long hair too so it was all natural and correct too.
To me, most important thing on cosplay is that person already has good base for the character. Never mind if strategical measures aren't correct, it's the playing the character and getting the right feeling to it. Extremely well made cosplay suits are good looking, but I enjoy more seeing those where person brings the character up within her/himself and is not just posing in pretty dress.

I am going to cosplay as Rikku too, biggrin I am sewing the costume ... and actually I need some advice too sweatdrop

My number 1 suggestion is to be as hot as her. Nothing is more discouraging as unattractive cosplay.
