I've just finished (had the final exam today) a course on world literature. One of the things we discussed was the creation of world literature canons - how difficult it is to decide what is to be called "World Lit" and what is not. So now I'm asking you: if you could compile a list of books (for any topic), what works would be in it and why?

I would make a Life canon. It would consist of Ellen Foster by Kaye Gibbons, Jacob Have I Loved by Katherine Patterson, Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flag, and Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach. Those novels, in that order, go from a basic self-realization to a sort of transcendental existance. 3nodding

(I'm also working on a fanfic canon for Rurouni Kenshin fanfictions. It's very exclusive. wink )

If I get you right I'd make something like this:
Canon: Fantasy

Books -
Harry Potter - Philosopher's Stone - J.K. Rowing ("De Vises Stein" in Norwegian)
--------------- Chamber of Secrets - J.K. Rowling ("Mysteriekammeret" in N.)
--------------- Prisoner of Azkaban - J.K. Rowling("Fangen fra Azkaban" in N.)
--------------- The Goblet of Fire - J.K. Rowling ("Ildbegeret" in N.)
--------------- Order of the Pheonix - J.k. Rowling ("Fønixordenen" in N.
--------------- Half Blood Prince - J.K. Rowling ("Halvblodsprinsen" in N.)
Lord of the Rings - J.R.R. Tolkien
Eragon - Chrisoper Paolini
The Hobbit - J.R.R. Tolkien
Silmarillion - J.R.R. Tolkien
Phenmena - 1 - Profetiens Utvalgte - Ruben Eliassen (Norwegian - Eng. Transelation "The Prophecy of the Chosen")
Glemselens Nøkkel - Marianne Hirsti (Eng. Transelation "The Key of Forgettfulness")
Ssorte Hvisskere - Marianne Hirsti (Eng. Transelation "Black Whisspererss*")

*Yes, that is spelled correctly as it is misspelled with intention with double S in Norwegian too.

NOTE: The transelations back and forth from English to Norwegan and vice versa are made by me so they may not be all that correct, so I apologize for any mistakes made.
