I keep finding these gems. That's what reading does to you.
“The futility of pronouncements from so many, together with the human ego & desire to encompass a magical phenomenon is to state in words what is the meaning of, or what is art, has served to confuse & confine something that in essence lives but is not life, beauty & truth which is near but is not God - something that is boundless & infinite - a magnitude beyond measure - something unidentifiable & yet has Form but which is not synonymous with nor can exist as form only.”
It's a grammatical mess, but I like the sentiment.

i second shadow's statement.
i don't even really understand what it's saying, though. i think that might be partly because of all the subordinate clauses and whatnot.

It basically starts off saying that any "pronouncement" on the nature of the creative act of art is futile, but then goes on to come pretty close to describing it himself. The last third is emphasising the intangibility of it, but what we have is a picture of the "spirit in the mass".
This is Bomberg again, by the way.

though i like less cryptic quotes, this is pretty nice. smile
i found a quote book in on my philosophy teacher's desk. some quotes in there are pretty sweet, others not so sweet. we definitly should start a quote thread. i'll post it in library sub forum.
