Do you consider yourself an intellectual? why?
PostPosted: Thu May 03, 2007 7:13 am

To me an intellectual is one who can find the points of view that almost no one else can find even if they don't necessarily believe in it. For example I recently did a 7 minute speech about how global warming is good rofl that is why I would like to think that I am an intellectual

A Convenient Truth
Current mood: amused

Think back to spring break, wouldn't it have been nice to enjoy warm weather during then entire week off instead of the snowy cold weather so many of us were unhappy about. In Al Gore's most recent mockumentary An Inconvenient Truth warns us of the "horrors" of global warming. Recently global warming had gotten a lot of bad press. But too many people fail to acknowledge the positive effects of such changes in climate.

In northern regions often times those living below the poverty line struggle to stay alive as the months grow cold. With no shelter from the elements many tragically perish in the long winter. However this can be prevented and very easily, I might add. The solution is to forget about the warnings of a thinning ozone and just get on with everyday life. A thinning ozone layer will warm the planet and save so many lives.

A spike in temperature will melt polar ice caps and cause sea levels to rise rapidly causing massive flooding in the world's oceans. This will benefit almost everyone; an increase in sea area will enable aquatic life to thrive, which in turn will result in an increase in the demand for jobs in the fishing industry. More fish equals cheaper prices which will allow the poor to find affordable sources of nutrition.

Warmer weather will also give farmers all over a longer growing season which will also produce more food for everyone, for example if winter doesn't exist anymore natural food products can be produced year round. Also global warming will make more annual rain fall which will even further benefit the crops.

While there will inevitably be some nations that will experience the negative effects of a warmer planet, this will be a benefit when one considers the larger stage of events. For you see the earth is becoming overpopulated at an increasing rate. This will be a form of population control to ensure that we decrease the amount of natural resources we use.

It is no small secret that Michigan winters can be bitter cold, but if the dreaded global warming effect happens then we won't have to worry about that now will we? Also our economy will flourish because with the elimination of winter, tourism will be lively all year round in this great state of Michigan. Our state will be a quite nice place to live and as such there will also be a decrease in people leaving our state.

Warm winters will ensure that the streets do not freeze in the wintertime; this will save a vast amount of money for everyone. There is an estimated 42 billion dollars spent each year on wintertime car accidents, while not all of these are connected to snow and ice a great amount of these will not happen saving the state billions of dollars each year. This will also mean that the state will not be required to spend funding on the operation and maintenance of salt trucks and snow plows. Less car accidents will also mean that insurance rates will go down. So you see global warming is really not so bad now is it?

We will also see a sharp increase in the production of oil which will lead to much lower prices at the pump. You see a lot of hippie activists are always whining and complaining that we are endangering the polar animals by drilling for oil in Alaska, but with global warming we won't have to worry about the stupid polar animals anymore. Sure they are cute but what real good do they do? It is also estimated that a massive oil field lays frozen and completely untouched beneath Antarctica, well now if Antarctica melts off the residing ice, we can gain access to this goldmine of wealth.

Many naysayers of global warming try their shameless scare tactics by threatening us with dire warnings that the world's population will be squished together. This is in fact a myth, for you see if there are no longer any ice sheets places like Greenland and Antarctica which are always covered with a large thick sheet of ice will be a quite desirable place to live.

Global warming gets a lot of negative attention, but everyone needs to wake up and realize that it will save money and lives for North America and Europe, is this really such a bad thing? 'Global warming, the greatest thing to hit the earth since the dinosaurs' so for all the hippie environmentalists out there; enjoy being cold, getting into car accidents, and letting the homeless freeze and starve to death.

This speech is primarily designed to raise your awareness that global warming is nothing but a large political ploy. Obviously I do not believe that global warming will benefit the world, it would be absurd to take this position. My examples of it's benefits are to hopefully make you take a step back and consider that the popular opinion is not always the correct way of thinking.

I consider myself an intellectual because on more than one occasion I have spoken and nobody has understood a word I said (I was speaking the same language) I can figuratively dance circles around most of the people I encounter intellectually with the exception every now and again, but in the end the only way it makes my happy is by cheap amusement, I mean being intellectual is fun, but knowing that you're probably the only one in that place or school, is somewhat depressing. but anyway that's just my perspective on it.

i do consider myself an itellectual, and not just the intellectual meaning that most people might get of straight as in school or something similar. i believe that intellectual is that but also being able tto comprehend and understand all sides of an argument, be able to solve problems you have never come across before. things like that that require some level of wisdom. i fit into those categories stated above. i mean i may make as and bs but i know that i am more intellectual than some people i know that make straight as.

I don't call myself an intellectual, maybe I am from the country of intellectuals (germany hah!), I only think the rest of the population is just dumb!

I didn't taste a high education, though. But I know how to use my brain and think, instead of the majority.
