What do you think of fanart? Should the drawing just be left to the people who draw manga professionally, and what about bad fanart? What makes it bad and why?

Do you even look at fanart much?

Is it just a way to get your favourite characters together?

I personally don't like to draw fanart because I hate to take someone elses character designs and butcher it up.
But I don't mind when other people draw it. In fact, I think it's a good thing some people draw fanart. Because if you practice drawing someone elses characters it helps you develop your own style.

But what I absolutely hate about fanart is the fact that some people copy something and claim it as their own original work. That's when fanart is bad.

i happen to have a personal dislike for fanart.

fanart should only be done if the artist is portreying the character as it was originally intended.

nothing makes me crazier than seeing two straight male/female characters making out in a fanart when that is NOT how the artist originally intended them.

i also hate seeing things like the characters from naruto singing kareoke done with crappy drawings and a bit of scribbly photoshop.

i hate this very much. it drives me crazy.

the way i see it, unless the pictures are good enough to be called art, and they portray the character as they were originally intended, there should not be any "fancrap"

grr.

So you mean that fans can't have fun with the characters by intentionally drawing them in weird situations or in less-than-perfect photoshop drawings?
Now, I understand the dislike of fanpairing fanart, but aren't you being a bit harsh with the other things?
'Cause I like to draw little crappy, 20 minute, parody fanarts in photoshop-- Does that make me a bad fan simply because I like to play around with the characters a little?

I think that fanart can be good for people who want to improve upon something that another artist does well so that they can make it part of their own art, but I don't think that fanart is really something one should use as a sample of their artistic abilities.

fan art is what started me in the ways of the cartoon :F I use to draw nothing but real people. I tried my hand at cartoons like manga and anime and my first was a fan art.. I found it so incredibly easy that I found my self doing it all the time. Tho now I do more original art then fan art for some reason.. but I started out with fan art..

I hate to say it but the reason why they call it fan art is because its a non original character from a book/film Drawn by the fan for their own amusement. This can take away from the original portraying because this is amusing to the artist... Kind of like how I like to make some characters more sophisticated with a pair of glasses and a book in their hands... Fan art is what ever melts the artists butter..

So be you hate or like Fan Art as long as there are people that get images stuck in their heads in a crazed fashion and as long as ppl continue to have their own imaginations and the ability to pick up a pencil its gonna happen.

thats really not what i meant.

as an artist, i just REALLY don't appreciate it when people f*ck around with the characters. (note that i also hate fanfic).

and its not that drawing them is the problem, its the fact that people are posting "fancrap" all over the damn internet.
its not a problem if you draw it, just keep it to yourself.

thats all. v.v

I'm ok with fanart. Yes true, sometimes they do butcher it, but it is good to encourage all who want to draw pathetic knock-offs of your work do so 'coz they might come up with a good idea you didn't with thier supreme intelectiual abilities...

i believe that everyone should have a chance to take a knack at drawing fanart becuz, even if they are bad at drawing, if they never draw, how will they improve, but u can't say it can be done by proffesionals because no one is born with natural talent, people only have the passion to draw

well, fanart is a way that people express themselves by portraying the characters of anime(or anything) into their own mind. if you are saying that expressing your feelings in art isn't right then you shoouldn't even be talking, and what if people who make fan art are crappy artists(no offense guys sweatdrop ), it doesn't mean that you can tell them that they can or can't do something. people who can't do something very well can always improve.(and maybe some of us actually put the effort into drawing a picture, and going through all the trouble to make those" scribbly drawings from photoshop", you have to love art with a passion! people who love art, will strive at achieving their goal no matter how many times they are told that they art sucks. what if say, you had a favorite hobby, lets say literacy, and you wrote a fictional story about some characters in anime, how would you feel if I looked at it and said, what piece of crap did you write? this proves you can never be a good writer. wouldn't that make you upset? i'm sure you've been told that SOMETIME in your life or else everyone just spoils you. I don't know about you, but when someone scolds my art, I feel like screaming at them and killing them(good thing i have good self control) you know, I could write an entire essay about how unfair people judge others likings and their efforts. I bet you aren't that kind of person that has a passion to do what they want EVERY SINGLE DAY even if it is a burden to them, and probably buy a scanner of a camera to upload onto the computer. again, I say, I don't know about you, but it takes me hours and hours to edit my pictures to make them look almost perfect on photoshop and paint, while also trying to finish my homework on time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! scream

I think fan art is good, it gives people who are serious at art a chance to practice and gives them a better idea of how to do expressions, poses, etc. when they go to create their own original art.

I used to draw alot more fanart, but i guess that shows that fanart is usually the begining for mangaka. I don't like the fanart that makes the characters act alot differently (like crazy fan pairings...)

I REALLY don't like those pictures that people take from anime snapshots of naruto and changing his hair color and eye color and say that it's yumikasuke how is sakura and naruto's son. Those are just insulting to the artist in my opinion

I think fanart is okay only if you can draw the original style. Bad fanart shouldn't be posted on the internet. Most bad fanart is just copied, thats what makes it suck. Sorry to those who copy sweatdrop But it really does look bad, especially if its not yours and people know it. The best drawings are your own.
I look at fanart all the time. It doesn't mean I like it. Its just how I am.

I used to draw fanart, and honestly it wasn't that good. But I learned from doing it that A) I cant draw people worth beans and B) I can design amazing clothes. I think that fanart is a stepping stone for other artists, they start by drawing their favorite characters and that can extend to them wanting to draw their own characters, and then polishing, their characters and so forth. It may not be fun for everyone else to look at, but for the artist its important.
