I work at a reputable hotel in the city of St. Paul, MN, and today the hotel celebrated it's 97th birthday, and it was apparently a big to-do because it's won a lot of awards or whatever, so it graced all of us with the prescence of one of our senators, Norm Coleman.
Of course, they had the party in one of the smallest of our banquet rooms, and I didn't really like the idea of ever being in the same zip code as the guy, so perhaps he noticed me by my furious attempts at avoiding eye contact. I had to curse my employers for inviting any political figure to mingle with employees, because I found myself concerned with the safety of my job as he slowly came closer.
He said something along the lines of a hello, and offered his hand, and I just couldn't take it. I tried to smile politely, and said "Sorry, I just can't shake the hand of someone who tries to strip the citizens he represents of their rights."
And then I promptly walked away and busied myself with cake and punch. While I had to bite my tongue to not say anymore, I'm glad I said something instead of smiling like a fool.

Go you!
What was his reaction?

Go you!
It sucks that you didn't get to say anything, but I know how that feels. I often regret not speaking out more. Today, a girl was reading her horribly-written pathetic excuse for a debate argument against abortion aloud to her friends. All I could bring up the courage to say was "If I was debating you, I would be able to tear you to shreds." and walk away.

Had I met him on the street or something like that I would have said more, but it happened at my place of work, and because he was a guest of our hotel I think I could have gotten in big trouble for it. I'm kind of surprised that the hotel's managers would risk that... especially if it's someone that's super outspoken about anything, because it could cause tension with the employees.
Then again, our hotel is hosting the Republican National Convention next year stare
I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

Good job! Thanks for speaking out. Your gesture was very tasteful and polite. Here's to hoping that he will sit down and think about that one. biggrin

Grip of Death Good job! Thanks for speaking out. Your gesture was very tasteful and polite. Here's to hoping that he will sit down and think about that one. biggrin Nah, he probably just thought "immoral slut whore uppity woman probably has PMS or something." My faith in the ability of people to learn from their mistakes or even acknowledge when they are wrong is small.

That's awesome!
When he was running for governor a while back, my roommate dressed up in a devil costume and handed out Coleman literature, claiming that Hell and all the demons were in full support of his campaign.

*high-fives*
I would've either just smiled and nodded, then flew the bird behind his back, or launched into a loophole-full, on-the-spot lecture.
adabyron's story made me chuckle.

When I heard he was going to be there that day, my mind just raced with all of the things that I could say.
That was probably the only one that would let me keep my job, lol.
And the devil costume story is awesome!
I just can't believe that when the guy was in college he was a total hippy who attended every anti-war protest... and now he's... well... a douche.
