[OOC NOTE: This is a continuation of a storyline NOT yet posted. Events happen before this. It is set when Ean is still a toddler]
PostPosted: Sun Apr 22, 2007 8:12 pm

The scientist - a one Joran Tora - paced around his new specimen, rubbing his hands together in glee. His father had been the cultivator of his curiosity in the unknown, and this boy was certainly a member of the realm of the unusual and strange. He didn't really care what the boy's name was, and simply called him E1 - Experiment One. Almost licking his lips, he studied the now tied and very tightly bound young one laid out on the makeshift operating table. He was an interesting being. Pale skin, intense orange eyes, silver hair... and that wing sticking from the boy's skull... Not to mention the wings on his back. Well, those three things would have to be removed at once. This is, after all, why he had his tools prepared and his 'scrubs' on. And why his assistant was dressed the same. With E1 unconscious, it would be all too easy to roll him onto his back. So he did so, securing the straps, and injecting with a 'wake up call' so that the boy was fully conscious and aware during the operation. E1 had not yet come to when he began slicing away the toddler's shirt to get at his back. He turned to his 'nurse'.

"Lixxie, would you be a love and place EKG leads? Also, bring me a glass of scotch while you're at it."

The man tossed his head to move his blonde bangs from his eyes, and focused the intense ebon gaze at the waking specimen.

"Good morning, sunshine."

She had no idea why she'd agreed to do this. Listening to n'Barit and forgetting she was ever scared of others seemed to be a better and better idea the more she did. Kidnapping, aiding in theft, and now whatever it was Joran wanted her to do, it was really getting her quite a criminal record. Lixxie wanted to stop, stomp on the ground, and shout at the world, But I'm not a bad, bad, dangerous man!

But instead, she was a love and began to place the leads as asked, eyes downcast and mouth set into a worried frown. Already she was near to red with shame.

With the task accomplished quickly- she'd studied this- she hurried off for the scotch. Maybe if she was slow enough, she wouldn't have to help. The little boy was barely a baby! At least that Aurelius girl hadn't really been a child, she'd been more intelligent, an adult, she'd had a chance to run and hadn't taken it.

Lixxie would have loved to run. The little boy...

She didn't, and instead brought Joran his scotch.

Joran accepted the scotch, and pulled gloves on, taking a laser-scalpel, and testing it on a piece of metal before he walked back over to the boy. He started with the shearing of the feathers. Painless for his 'patient' - but scary.

Ean started to cry. And this made Joran lose his patience.

"WOULD you shut him up, Lixxie?! I can't concentrate, and I might slip!"

Ean's pleading eyes turned to Lixxie as much as they could while he was on his back. Or at least they did for a few moments... Then the pain hit as Joran hit bone.

Lixxie shushed him, pressing one hand gently over his mouth. Not tight enough to "I'm sorry, I'm sorry," she chanted softly to him, the words taking on a soft, monotonous feel in her mouth, as if it were full of cotton. "Please don't cry, little boy, please. It'll be over soon, okay? I promise you, I promise." She knew she was lying. She'd heard Joran talking about this for days, no, weeks as he planned.

After this, no more. Her heart was breaking into tiny glass shards and cutting her up as it did. She would stay away from Joran forever, and listen to her father next time he told her to keep off from someone.

Joran continued the surgery, slicing through the boy's bone like butter, and using a paring knife to smooth and round off the edges of the bone still protruding. He did the same with the other wing. He'd excise them completely in time. He took hold of the boy, amidst struggling, rolled him onto his back, and strapped him down again, once more testing the scalpel, before tackling the wing on the boy's head. Ean screamed. The EKG showed his heart was racing out of control. Joran scowled.

"Lixxie - Monitor the boy. You'll find a stethoscope on the wall over there. Of course, you'll have to get him to stop screaming so you can hear."

He gave up the cutting, and simply PULLED the rest of the thing from the boy's head. Blood spurted everywhere.

"Sunnuva.... My order stands! I'll take care of this."

He fetched bandages, and started sewing up the wound, wrapping white linen cloth around it afterwards to stop the bleeding.

She let go and stopped her chanting, trying to ignore how sticky her hands were starting to feel as she picked up the stethoscope, pausing for a moment and breathing deeply to convince herself not to throw up right there. Then she returned, humming to herself in distraction- Beethoven's Ninth, just loud enough that she could hear over the screaming and Joran's cursing.

"Wouldn't it be easier to just chlorofoam him?" Her voice was soft, and she didn't bother to look directly at him. She expected him to yell at her, and knew she'd probably get that as soon as he was no longer distracted.

Lixxie pressed a little harder on the boy's mouth and blinked back tears. Why couldn't she say no to anyone?

Ean started to calm down at the woman's touch, and closed his eyes. He stopped screaming. The EKG was still beeping a speed warning, but he was quiet now. Tears trickled from his eyes, as blood mingled with them on his cheeks.

"Chloroform? It would skew the results, Lixxie."

He looked at the wings and headwing on the other table.

"Fascinating...."

"But he's hurting," she argued half-heartedly. Joran would know she wasn't really arguing. She wouldn't dare have a confrontation with anyone if she could help it. Lixxie sighed half-heartedly and hummed a quiet lullaby to the boy, trying her best to ignore her surroundings. She didn't dare actually sing.

"Lixxie... I gave you a task. Please monitor the boy!"

He started bringing up the X-Rays he had taken earlier, studying them.

"I wonder... pressure on the cardio-respiratory system...."

He turned back to the boy, and rubbed his chin in thought.

"How long would you survive, I wonder..."

"I am!" Her voice was barely a squeak as she paid more attention to the heartbest. "It's fast but it sounds like it's not missing any beats," she ventured, then returned to her humming until she caught his other comment.

"You're not going to kill him, are you?" That was where she drew the line. Elixabeté Lille de Verdelet would not be accessory to murder. She brushed at the little boy's hair, her worry visible in her face.

Joran shrugged, and laughed slightly.

"Lix, my dear, DEAR Lix. What should it matter if I killed the thing? He's not a 'real' child, after all. He's a monster. A creation. Something to be taken apart and studied. Get that idea firmly into your head, or you'll never make a scientist. He doesn't have feelings. All that's happening with him is the generic programmed response to stimulus that every living being has. It's nothing to be concerned about."

He took another stethoscope, and checked the specimen's heart for himself, thinking.

"Typical cardiac response, hmm? We'll just have to see if we can't change that."

Within a few moments, he had another syringe in his hand, and had injected the liquid into the protesting E1's arm.

"There. That should make the cardiac response a tad more interesting. I have more if need be."

But I don't want to be a scientist, she wanted to say. At least, not like you. I'm going to be an arcanist and create great spells. "It's Lixxie," she mumbled, thinking that it was very obvious that E1 did have feelings and very strong ones too.

"What is that?" Lixxie was interested, despite herself.
PostPosted: Wed Apr 25, 2007 8:18 am

Joran smiled, and readied another syringe filled with the stuff, setting it aside on the tray. He watched as E1's skin started to become pale.

"It's a creation of my own. A drug meant to make the subject's heart respond violently. A rather ingenious mixture, actually."

He stood back from E1, and watched as the boy's struggles became weaker.

"And from the looks of it, it's working."

She shuddered and brushed at E1's hair halfheartedly. "Won't he have family that will miss him, though?" For a moment, the wild idea of just grabbing the little boy and fleeing. But she knew Joran, and she also knew her own limitations. He'd just ask for her to bring him back, and she would.

Damnit. Ever since she'd met that green-haired guy, Lixxie had been pointing out her own faults more and more often.
