Meeki's Quest for a Death Knight. Couldn't resist tossing an image of the Death Knight, Lord Soth as a banner image. He's a sexy beast of a man.

Death Knight

In the Dungeons and Dragons role-playing game, a death knight is a mighty warrior animated as an undead creature by the gods of death, evil deities, demon lords, or other malevolent forces.

Ecology

Martial champions of evil, death knights are usually created by demon lords or evil deities. These horrible undead are most commonly raised from the ranks of blackguards, fighters, rangers, and barbarians, but a paladin who falls from grace near the moment of death may also become a death knight.

Death knights generally retain most aspects of their personalities after the transformation, and may continue to observe the same code of honor that they held in life (never attacking from behind, for example).

A death knight has an aura of fear that will rout groups of low level enemies, can channel powerful negative energy with a touch, and the ability to project explosions of fire and unholy energy.

Fallen Paladin/Blackguard Info
The blackguard epitomizes evil. He is nothing short of a mortal fiend. The quintessential black knight, this villain carries a reputation of the foulest sort that is very well deserved. Consorting with demons and devils and serving dark deities, the blackguard is hated and feared by all. Some people call these villains anti-paladins due to their completely evil nature.

Blackguards who have levels in the paladin class (that is to say, are now ex-paladins) gain extra abilities the more levels of paladin they have. Those who have tasted the light of goodness and justice and turned away make the foulest of villains.

Environment

Though rare, death knights may be found in any environment, but often choose fortified lairs, such as old castles and towers.

Typical physical characteristics

A death knight's physical form is that of its decayed body. The face is a blackened skull with patches of rotting flesh, with two pinpoints of orange light in the eye sockets. The voice of a death knight is chilling, seeming to echo from deep within. Death knights were powerful people in life and so they often wear expensive or magic clothing and armor. They are quite fond of wearing flowing capes to mark them as figures of importance.

Alignment

Death knights are always evil.

A Tale of Darkness

Kill.

Kill. Kill.

"Kill"

The word came as a mere whisper as she pointed her finger at the target. The victim's face contorted with pain and he grew thinner and more pale, as if the life was being choked out of him. It wasn't long before his body dropped to the ground, unmoving.

Though she succeeded in killing the lord of this land, she was still in the middle of battle. With grace, she pulled her bloodstained sword out from its sheath and went slicing through the villagers. Most lacked the skill of a trained fighter. It seemed that all the real defenders have already been silenced. She could respect that these people still fought to protect their home.

She was known through the lands as the Dark Lady. Little was known of her past life though certainly, rumors circulated. Some of them were true. She was indeed Lady Mekaela Hawthorne, a famous paladin that disappeared thirty years ago when she brutally slayed her family. Some believed she was captured by the knights she once served with and put to rest but most.. knew better.

A shadow crossed her eyes as she recalled the family she once had and loved. She had been bewitched. As a paladin she should have known better, should have seen through the darkness. Should have stood with what was right and just. Something went wrong and she let the darkness in, believed their lies. Believing true power could be attained through killing her family.. she did as she was told. Her husband.. and children. Layla was only four at the time and Trevorn was barely two. She showed no sympathy as she tore through their bodies with her sword. It was only afterwards that she lay in the mess on the floor that she cried and begged to her god to forgive her.

Forgive her, he had not.

She got what she wanted out of it, in the end. She was killed on the spot and reborn in her the same body as a Death Knight. As the years passed, her body decayed more and more and now she was a near skeletal creature. She got the power she sought, more than she had ever wanted, but it came at a great price.

Secretly, the Dark Lady wished for peace. Wished for Death. Wished for true justice. She did as she was told and she killed on a daily basis. She ran an undead army and tore through the lands like a horrendous plague. This was her life now but still, she craved for peace. Still honor bound, she would not kill herself, or die willingly. It had to be earned. What she didn't know was that such peace was right around the corner.

The allies were closing in though the battle was nearly over. The deed was done, the lord was killed and the city was barely standing. Still, the allies charged on and Mekaela, clad in her ebony armor, climbed up on her Nightmare steed and charged forward to meet them, the remaining skeletal armor following close behind.

The Dark Lady held strong, taking down many a knight as she pummeled through their forces. As she raised her sword to strike another knight, a bright light appeared from the distance and shot out her. It took a moment to realize that she was hit by a powerful spell. She knew then that her life was quickly fading.

She raised her sword still and charged forth, taking down two more knights as she made her way towards the mighty mage. She pointed her finger at him but the power word, "Kill", could not come forth. She toppled over and started to fall from her undead steed.

If her mask had not been on, perhaps those nearby would be able to see the peaceful smile that came to her skeletal face.

She was dead before she hit the ground.

Further Clarification

I was told that the death didn't seem tragic, painful, or unfair, so I wanted to explain this. If death was punishment enough for Mekaela, her god would have killed her the night she brutally slayed her family. That was not the punishment intended for Mekaela. Instead, she was cursed to live lifetimes as an undead creature, child of darkness, in forever punishment for her grave sins.

So Mekaela's death as a Death Knight is indeed very unfair. She cheated the punishment placed on her. She got what she wanted. Though she died in a way noble to herself and her beliefs, it was still a cop out in the end. As such, she did not learn any lessons. She did not feel remorse or regret. She merely wanted out of the curse, selfishly. She continued killing until the very end.

Rhiana (the guardian), is full of life, all the things that the deity wants for Mekaela to learn. I don't think it was a coincidence that Rhiana would become Zin's guardian. It could be the god that cursed Mekaela taking her soul and putting it into the wand, etc, so that she couldn't get out of learning the lessons that are demanded of her. Rhiana would be a great source for this knowledge, compassion and love.

Though Mekaela would be Zin and wouldn't remember her past life, they are still lessons that she must learn to appease the wrongs of many that she sinned against. This would be seen as a second chance for her, a chance to experience love and friendship again, a chance to control the darkness that will test her and tease her. A chance to overcome it.

The Ghost

Name: Zin
Gender: Female
Race: Death Knight
Likes: Swords, fighting, controlling undead, undead in general, power.
Dislikes: Body modifications, goodie two-shoes, dishonesty, dishonor, betrayal, romance and immorality.

Wand: The wand would be black with a skull tip, perhaps with a spike coming out of the top.

Baby: Zin would be a pale baby with black hair, kind of unkempt. Her eyes would be red. She'd be an antisocial and quiet baby, but very watchful of the world around her.

Toddler: Her hair would be getting longer and if possible, kept in two short pigtails. Other than this, no real changes will have taken place. She might be a little more social but she wouldn't speak very often. Still a watcher of the world around her. She may start to show rebellious tendancies at this stage, though nothing that stands out from the average toddler. She still remains pale as well.

Kid: Her pigtails will have grown longer and one may appear loose and the other braided. Though she still says as few words as possible, she starts showing an air of authority and liking to be in charge. This can be seen through child projects or games. Despite showing a fondness for cruelty, she is honest and upfront about her misdeeds. Strange little kid. She still remains pale no matter how often she's in the sun. It's at this stage that she realizes she has darkvision and a fascination for bladed items.

Teenager: Her hair is starting to get long as she's never cut it. One is still braided and one still flows loosely. She doesn't believe in piercings or body alterations so she has no tattoos or anything like that. She also keeps dyes away from her hair. It's straight and still as black as the day she was born. Her eyes start appearing to glow at night now that she's older and more in control of her body and emotions. Despite being quiet, there's still a hint of something lurking within her but she manages to keep it at bay quiet well. She has come in contact with a used sword and uses it to practice fighting in her spare time. Perhaps at this stage she can become aware of some magical aura to her though she would not know what it is exactly or how to use it.

Youth: Her hair now reaches to her waist and is kept in a large array of braids and loose pigtails. She has upgraded herself to the use of a real sword, a fascination that has only continued to grow along with her. She has also learned a few of the magical talents she possesses. She has not yet mastered either thing and is obsessed with furthering her studies in both magic and swordfighting. The darkness she displayed as a child starts to become controlled at this stage as well. Though she is capable of evil, she chooses not to be evil.

Adult: She is now skilled in swordfighting and spellcasting. Though she doesn't know it, she's a perfect balance of the creature she used to be. While she has the potential to be evil (and thus has a knack for breaking rules), a part of her maintains the humanity and in that, she conquers the true evil within her. She becomes neither the good and just human she had lived as in her past life nor the Death Knight she had died as but a mix of both. She may not know who those people were but perhaps this was her second chance, given to her by a god she had once loved and forsaken, a god that had once loved and forsaken her as well.

Note: I left out a lot of personality and whatnot because I believe in playing the character and adapting to changes that may take place, so I want to give room for the character to grow.

The Guardian
Name: Rhiana Du'Ragon
Gender: Female
Age: N/A
Ethnicity: Caucasian
Height: 5'5
Weight: 120 lbs

Appearance: Rhiana is a petite thing with long blonde hair which she keeps in pigtails. One is always loose and one is always braided. Of course, she keeps Zin's hairstyle in a very similar style. Rhiana has green eyes and pale skin.

Personality: Rhiana is an eccentric creature and her lifestyle certainly supports it. She lives day by day and seldom plans anything. Her outfits are often flamboyant and colorful, hinting at the carefree lifestyle she entertains. She's all about having fun and making the most of your life, emotionally. Some believe that this sudden change in her came with a brush of death when she used to be a cop.

Rhiana is a very loving individual, unable to have children of her own due to physical problems. As such, she has a lot of love to give to a child. She'd be the type of mother to give their child freedom to choose their own path but always be there to support them in their time of need.

Job: Rhiana is currently a freelance author, illustrator and artist. She spends her time writing and illustrating children books as well as painting. She used to be a cop a few years back and from what people say about her, a damn good one. But during a drug bust, she was left critically wounded with two shots to the chest and her partner was killed. She quit the force and took up a less life threatening career. Life was too short to live dangerous.

Likes: Rhiana likes meat, she's a carnivore through and through though she likes some vegetables such as corn and potatoes. She loves painting, drawing and writing as well as relaxing on a blanket and watching the stars flicker in the sky. She simply enjoys living her live and loving every minute of it.

Dislike: Rhiana dislikes drug users/abusers, murders, *****, law-breakers and those that seem to disrespect the life of others as well as their own.

I am a little confused. If I read right, the character's deaths are suppose to be tragic, unjust, or the character passed on before their time. To me, it sounds like the character died peacefully, justly, and she wanted it. Can you clarify this for me?

Sure. It's simply not a matter of what she wanted. It was peaceful to her but just it was most certainly not.

If she was meant to die, she would have died as punishment for the sins she committed instead of being cursed as a Death Knight. Her death as a Death Knight was what SHE wanted. She was able to cheat the curse that way so she was always hoping that someone would eventually kill her. She got what she wanted.

However, it doesn't stop there because the curse wasn't meant to be cheated. The family that she brutally murdered were never avenged. Mekaela didn't learn anything from her curse. She went along killing and destroying even more innocent life and giving in to the complete darkness.

She did not earn nor deserve the right to die. The right to have peace.

She merely found a loophole.

So her death, though a peace to her, is a tragedy still to the innocent lives she took and it didn't make the god that cursed her none too pleased either.
