I'll just get right to the point: I wanna get into the series, but I don't know where to start. ^_^; If I just jump right into the current season, will I know what the heck's going on? Or should I start with one of the earlier ones (and if so, how would I go about that)?

You can start with the beginning of the new ones. With the Ninth Doctor. He's the one in the leather jacket with the nose. 3nodding That first new season explains it again. Then from there it'll make sense what is going on. See, there is a new companion, Rose, so she has to learn too. So that way you will also learn. wink

It is indeed all the same continuity. The Doctor regenerates, changes bodies, each season, and gains a different partner. The ninth season is an excellent place to start, although if you wanna see the glory of the older ones I don't know where to suggest to you.

Actually we better hope he doesnt change bodies and regenerate each season. Otherwise, he'd be dead real quick or the evil Doc.
We don't want either of those now do we?
Seriously if you would like to know about Dr. Who ... go to Wikipedia. They have an extensive history, which will get you up to date on who every character in the series is.
And according to lore, I believe they have to stick with the current doctor or change Docs only twice more before he becomes evil.
But yeah, the first season is a great place to start. It actually makes you appreciate the "second" Doctor more. Not that the first wasn't good, but he was just not as funny or as action oriented.

I find if you watch enough of the series you will catch on. It is that simple. Has the new series started?
