I noticed too. Every time I go to the US, I am assaulted with "patriotism". Comparatively few people here fly Canadian flags or stuff like that at their houses - more people fly flags of their heritage, actually.

I get that too. I'm half american but in no way patriotic. I live in my other half, Austria. I find the patriotism appaling. Reminds me of the Nazis too much. Like singing the anthem at special events (or not so special events). I never sing when i go to a baseball game with my cousins. I just look around at the crowd to tryn pick out the crazy patriots to know to avoid them in the cue at the hotdog stands.

Mind you, i know a lot of americans who live abroad. And they are downright ashamed of the way the country is run and all the frou-frou patritotism. Needless to say they all vote liberal or democrat when elections roll around. Only the ones stuck on military bases vote republican and even thats rare.

I live in England and I hardly EVER see flags unless it's the world cup or something. Then they're all over cars and such. It's a little irritating, but I don't mind - they're just showing support for their team.

I don't remember much about my only visit to America, but I'll probably come again at some point in the next few years and then maybe I'll see.

Ya think signing the national anthem during a sports event is bad? :p

That doesn't offend me at all. I actually kinda like listening to other country's national anthems too. I see it as a cultural thing that I can enjoy.

nono, i don't have any issues with the national anthem, just the fact that i would get my a** reamed for choosing not to sing. because i hate to sing. xD

My grandparents (on my dad's side) throw annual family get-togethers on the family farm (which we share with them). During that time we often have at least one family flying in from a different country -- to celebrate their coming we take down the American flag (which my grandparents feel obligated to fly) and put up the flag from the traveling company's hailing land to honour their presence.

We have, to date, flown a Finnish flag, a Swedish flag, a British flag, and a Norwegian flag -- the Swedish is used most often.

Do you have family in Sweden? I have some relatives in USA, my cousin being my closest relative "over there" (he is married to an American woman), and a few others who I've never met.

It's the same thing here. It's kind of strange, people walk around with the American and British flags on clothes, bags and so on, but hardly anyone wears anything with the Swedish flag on. Everyone are so afraid of being called rasist. It's really sad, because that allows for scumbags like Neonazis to hijack not just the flag, but also our anthem.

I'd like more of a balance between patriotism and PC..

The germans stole ours and left us with the crappy one. crying crying

I don't know hardly anyone who knows the austrian national anthem by heart. It IS wonderful that a country has its national anthem and listening to them is good too but getting it BLARED constantly in your ear while your trying to watch something or EAT or something is highly irritating. And it reminds me of the Nazis. crying

Flags/anthems during special events is fine but displaying them constantly like some people have them hanging off their porch year round and maybe washing it once every 5 years is over-kill.
