Well I at least think that's the right place to post this.

To the point

So as you all see the media is focuses on non-challenging entertainment that's focuses only on forgetting about real life and wasting time.

There are some exceptions amongst the objects, but they aren't really common.

Since we all classify ourselves as philosophers it's highly likely that we are interested in watching media that suits our philosophical desires of a deep and challenging trip.

So I ask you to post your philosophical movies.

1 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0243017/combined

That movie is pure philosophy. Actually the whole movie shows only characters disscussing life, death and dream.

2 http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=247
Boogiepop phantom. There's a lot of symbolics in this movie, that challange your mind. That's why I classify it as an at least deep movie.

3http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=166
Serrial experiments Lain - The same as boogiepop
4http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0246578/combined
Donnie Darko - Well it's has some philosophical reflections, and it has (at least the non-directors cut) a challenging plot
5 Cat soup-http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=1011

Well that's one ofl the most surreal and filled with symbols anime ever made. (not to mention it's also quite bizzare, but that's actually not revelant to the topic)

I know some people wont classify these movies as philosophical, but surreal and alienic. But I say that everything that challenges your mind to such capacieties is philosophical.
Because it makes you think about things.

And acording to the dictionary http://dictionary.reference.com/search?r=2&q=philosophy
Philsophy is a pursuit of wisdom, and wisdom is something really relative.

When It comes to media, I classify movies that you need to watch 5 time to even half- way understand the plot. Movies that are filled with symbols.

6 Rocky horror picture show - one might not see it, but every song is symbolic. And all in all this movie tells the story of the philosophy of the gothic culture.
All in all that movie in certain is on the edge from "philosophical" to "psychedelic and alien".

And as a philosopher, you should be able to find greater meaning behind anything, regardless of if it's intent was entertainment. Every single thing I have ever watched has had some sort of greater meaning or lesson to be garnered from it. Such may not be the focus of the series, but since when was the focus of life itself mere ponderings about life? Most shows carry within them some sort of social commentary, moral, or philosophy. Take the show Stargate for example. Within it's stories are complex themes that probe at the nature of humanity. Sure, it's also entertainment. But it also has its philosophy in every episode.

I've seen parts of some of the series you've mentioned. The only real difference is that they force you to think instead of hold the message within for those who dare to seek it out. Likewise, the series you've mentioned are quite dark, and... that's only one side to the picture. I'd classify them more in the horror genre than philosophy. Horror is an interesting way at probing at human nature, but other series like Stargate do it just as well without being... creepy.

Yes I'm aware that almost every show has a moral in it, but I like to point show in which you have to search in them for the moral and message.
Why?
Because that trains your brain , and training the brain helps you to think.
Training the brain is the only way to be a philosopher, just like training the muscles is the only way to be a cultists.
Actually those films are the main reason I became interested in philosophy.

Actually creepiness is for it is unknown, and what is unknown is something we need to learn. And everything new learned expands our knowledge, and knowledge is the essence of philosophy.

And actually everyone classifies something else to be "philosophical".

I personally classify those series as the most philosophical ever. Why?
Because they have parts of my philosophy of life, and have a similar way of thinking about some things.

Well games that I classify as philosophical are:

The shin Megami Tensei:nocturne http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/582958.asp?q=shin megami tensei
and
Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga
http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/920605.asp?q=shin megami tensei

The first one is about the world after the end of it. Where you play the role of a person who became chosen and now has to chose a reason for the rebirth of a new world.
There are many "reasons" in this game, and each of them leads to a different ending.

I think describing one would be enough to point you the basic principle of this game.

Musubi - my favorite.

It's a reason based totally on solitute.
Let me quote it.

We are are alone all the time, even in the society. When you go on the street people ignore you and go on with their own lives. You're alone in the society no matter if you believe it or not. It's neither good or bad. It's just a different way of living. And actually the only way of achieving eternal happiness is to be god of your own world, where you are alone and can do whatever you want...

(Well I've changed some things in that quote, and didn't tell you everything so I won't spoil you a game.)

I didn't finish the second one, but it is in a similar style, so I can't and won't describe it.

Well since I know you americans have more money than we poles do, I highly recommend you to buy those games if you want a good hard rpg with a really good story.

I would buy those games, if they wouldn't be so expensive for me.

So I'll just stick....(ah deduce it.)

Rent 'I heart huckabees'. It's a philosophical journy, and it's hilarious.

I wouldn't mind contributing some philosophical material:

Tales of Symphonia (Video game)
Has some fascinating religious significance.

Geek Love (Book)
Read this book. I cannot overstate that.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (Movie)
This movie has a lot to say about life, the decisions we make, the mistakes we repeat, and relationships.

American Beauty (Movie)
This movie is a profound piece of sheer genius.

The Road Less Traveled (Book)
I just started reading this book, and I already highly recommend it. The auther gets straight to the point, and gives excellent advice for anyone who wishes to grow as a person.

The Wisdom of the Enneagram (Book)
I had to add this because it's a personal favorite. If you are interested at all in getting to know yourself and others better, then you should pick up a copy of this book.

I have others, but I won't list them right away.

Enjoy!
