Practical Theory Classwork

3. Explain the difference between life and spirit, and how each of them is used.

Life energy is what you use to live. You get it from eating food. Spirit energy is what's left over after that food's turned into life energy... so eating lots of food gives you lots of spirit energy!

Life energy is used to keep you alive. Spirit energy is magic. And when you kill something, its life becomes spirit energy. And the chimeras can eat it and be magical!

Universal Theory Reflection
aka. "Oh s**t what will I do?!"

Kaden pulled into the driveway and had barely put the car into park before Caleb was hopping out and letting Rex out. "Hey! Got any homework?" The man shouted as the kid and chimera ran around the house to the backyard.

"No!" came the shouted reply and Kaden sighed. He picked up Caleb's backpack from where the kid had tossed it into the floor upon entering the car. As he carried the bag into the house, a piece of paper fell out. The man picked it up and started to put it away before one word in particular caught his attention. "Exam?" He started reading through the assignment. "TOMORROW?!"

The man dropped the bag in the entryway landing and raced up the half flight of stairs to the main level of the house. Riordan poked his head out from Reese's room, where the two were playing. "Something the matter?"

Kaden scowled. "Caleb has an exam tomorrow and I doubt he's done the work for it."

Riordan sighed. "Good luck." Both men knew the canine boy hated having to sit and do stuff. But they made him do his homework before he was allowed to play outside. It seemed to encourage him to do it faster, though not always correctly...

Opening the back door, Kaden sighed as he saw Caleb and Rex running about. The two always had so much energy... He shouted the boy's name to catch their attention, waving the piece of paper in the air. Caleb frowned and went to see what was up.

"You do have homework." Kaden stated, pointing towards the house. "You know the rules. Gotta finish homework before you can play."

"I don't have any." The boy frowned, reaching for the paper. "That's a test. Not homework."

Kaden sighed. "But you're supposed to do stuff BEFORE the exam. It says that you're supposed to present a question and answer. What's your question then."

"Can I go play. Answer is yes. There, done!" The boy started to run off, but his father's hand on his shoulder halted that.

"Funny, Caleb. However, I don't think your teacher would find it so." He herded the boy inside and sat him down at the kitchen table. "Now, do your research. When you're done, present it to me like you will tomorrow for your teacher. It'll help you, I promise."

Caleb scowled and absentmindedly doodled on a blank sheet of paper as he thought. Finally a thought came to him and he ran to ask his dad if he could use the computer to look some stuff up. The internet had lots of stuff on it.

However, Kaden's idea was to go to the library and look at books instead. "You'll find more there. We can go to the college library and there are lots of books there that are good for research. Plus, sometimes, people put false information online."

"They lie?" Caleb frowned. "Why would they do that?"

Kaden chuckled as he grabbed the car keys and told Riordan where they were going. "Most of the time it's because they don't know any better. The books in the library are checked before they are put out to make sure that everything in them is true."

The two drove to the college campus where Kaden still taught night classes and the man led Caleb to the library. The boy hadn't been exactly excited that Rex had had to stay home, but Kaden stated that libraries didn't allow pets and they'd think Rex was a strange pet. Caleb had asked how the library was such a good place if pets weren't allowed, but his father had just said that some of the books were very expensive and that the library was a quiet place for reading and studying.

"Many college students have to do research papers, much like what you have to do for your test tomorrow. Only, they have to write a paper and also present their idea to instructors. Now... let's go over here to this computer. We can access the card catalog and that'll tell us where the books you're looking for are located."

Caleb had been wondering how he was going to find the book he needed in this place. It was huge! And there was room after room filled with shelves, each crammed with books. A few rooms had computers and there were other rooms that just had a table and chair at them.

"What's your question?" Kaden whispered, a pointed reminder to Caleb that he was to be very quiet while they were in here.

"What is an immune system?" Caleb whispered back. "My teacher said that my class was like the immune system of the world. But what is that?"

Kaden typed 'immune system' into the search and pressed enter. A list of results started to appear, causing Caleb to give a startled sound of surprise, then he looked about since he hadn't been very quiet.

Kaden ruffled the boy's hair and smiled. "No one's going to yell at you for that. It is rather amazing that we found so many books on the topic." He grabbed a pencil and a small piece of paper that was located at the computer for the purpose of writing down book call numbers.

"There. We've got some that sound like it shouldn't be too complex. The immune system is a rather complex thing. We'll look and see how much we can understand."

Some time later, Caleb was sitting at a table, a stack of books in front of him. He was making his way through the information, having to stop on occasion and ask his father what this word meant or what was meant by that. Sometimes, Kaden didn't even know and so they'd move on to another book in hope of a simplier explaination.

Finally, Caleb had a lot of notes and sighed. Kaden picked up the books and put them on a cart for reshelving. "Whoo... it's getting late. I've got to teach class soon... I'll call Dad and have him come pick you up. I want you to work on what you're going to say when you get home, okay? We'll go over it more in the morning."
