Mpaji yawned, stretched, rolled over, and attempted to go back to sleep. He blinked several times, but the heat still kept coming in. Grumbling lightly he rolled back over, and his paw hit on something soft.

He mumbled and poked one eye open, not bothering to move his paw quite yet. It was resting lightly on a caracass of some animal. Pinning his ears back, he wondered how it had gotten there. He certainly didn't catch it. Rolling onto his feet he looked around.

There were two cubs, not too far away.

Oh.

He was supposed to be watching those. Right. He was glad Uzulu wasn't around to beat some sense into him, and even more enthralled the brothers hadn't decided to run off. Now where had that bedammed carcas come from?

"You two boeties haven't been causing any trouble, have you?" he questioned with a frown that was only half serious. "Because if you have, I'll be reporting you to your mother." Even though Uzulu spent half the time telling them their mother was crazy and they need not listen to anything she said.

The gold didn't want to know what Uzulu told the children about him.

"Come on you lazy lags, time to go someplace." Mpaji had no idea where they were going, but he intended to freak the hell out of them today and die laughing. Then plead with them not to tell Uzulu about it.

A small yawn echoed Mpaji's large one, and bright violet eyes flickered open.

Kien blinked and stared up at his guardian, his mind still bogged down with sleep. Going somewhere? It was so hot, and all he wanted to do was close his eyes... the cub stretched his tiny body. It was too hot. Paws already large for his age tensed and relaxed, and a second yawn escaped. Now, however, awareness had gained a foothold and was fighting back. Sleep slowly unraveled and relinquished it's dark hold on his young mind. As the mist lifted Kien stumbled to his feet and nudged his brother. A purr rumbled up out of his throat, although it almost seemed reluctant.

He had a strange feeling his father wouldn't approve of him purring.

Well... his father didn't really approve of him in general, so maybe it didn't really matter. Dark eyes turned to Mpaji.

"Where are we goin', Paji?" Swishing his tail in growing delight, Kien toddled over to the male. "It's hoooot out!" Still, his purple eyes were wide with excitement at the prospect of more exploration. The tiny male chewed abesently on his caretaker's white tail tuft.

Besides, it was -always- hot here.

The sound of a deeper voice that was much like the rumble of thunder to the young lion's sleeping brain jostled young Kai out of his sleep. Opening an eye to look around and gain his bearings the young cub stretched his body out with a yawn while rolling onto his back before returning onto his side. Twisting his front half around a bit to look at his brother and Mpaji, Kai yawned again, "Go somewhere?"

Shaking his head to help rid the last bit of sleepy haze from it, the cub scrambled to his paws, tripping ever so slightly until finally getting his still tired and hot body under control. "But that sun is still high which means everyone else will be sleepin' too." Hearing his brothers question on places to venture to, Kai nodded his head, "Yea where would we go?" He questioned with a tilted head and a flagged tail before shifting to his brother's side.

It was quie obvious that when the two were side-by-side that Kai wasn't quite as large as his younger brother. It wasn't as obvious when the two weren't standing so close but Kai was certainly shorter in stature and not quite as bulky. The young lion inherited the slender form that could be found around the Firekin. Kai most definitly didn't take after his grandfathers size whom he resembled so strongly in features.

Mpaji looked from his tail, to the cub and back again. He saw it go for the tail, and pinned his ears. Then it was nibbling away, right on the tip of his beautiful tail.

"Wha- Oh, huh," he grunted, attempting to regain whatever thoughts he'd been having. "Right, going somewhere," Upendo'Mpaji repeated, still watching the cub decimate his tuft. "Uh. . . . "

He eyed the other one, the Kemeti one. Kaanga called this one Kai'Melos, but he'd probably have to adress it as small baas or whatever the hell Uzulu had told him to say. No, take that back, the whole damn Firekin kingdom.

He scowled at them, though it was only playful. "Its hot, and it builds character," he explained to Kienge. Mpaji, of course, didn't believe a single word of that character s**t. Oh now, it was all a bunch of poopycock. Right.

"And where," he added. "Would the fun be if you knew where you were going. Then, it goes from adventure to travel - and everyone knows that travel is just boring." He seemed satisfied with the answer and started out, swishing his tail behind him as though to intimidate Kienge.

"Now children, I must warn you," Mpaji started, then caught his tongue. "Oh, but, I really shouldn't tell you. Your mother will have my head if you got nightmares from it!"

"Oh. Alright." Kienge wasn't quite sure he knew what character was, or why one would want to build it with heat, but he supposed the older lion knew what was what. He continued to chew, unaware of Mpaji's displeasure.

"I like travel too!" Kienge chirped. "I don't mind jus' travelin' and -"

His eyes narrowed as Mpaji's tail whipped away from his reach and swished tauntingly in his path. Rising to his paws, Kienge trotted in Mpaji's wake and attempted to catch his "prey" again.

Failure.

The cub made a face at Mpaji's back and fell in step next to his brother. His purple eyes remained focused on the white tail tuft that weaved inticingly in front of him. Sometime, Mpaji would forget or be distracted. The cub grinned.

"Aww, c'mon, Paji! You can tell us!" Trust mothers to ruin all their fun even when they WEREN'T around. "I promise I won't tell Mama!"

Feeding off of his younger brother's energy, Kai began bouncing around the older lion as well. "I like going someplace though." He said as he, like his brother began going after the claves tail though with no interest on knawing upon the fluffy tip. "How about we go to the oasis! I like playing in the water." He said with a smile as he managed to get his paws on the appendage, though missing the tip all together and grabbing it further up.

"Yea! We won't tell Ma!" He echoed his brother, his olive green orbs shining as he looked up from the tail trapped under his oversized paws.

Wonderful, beautiful - wretched children! The little red one had just nabbed his tail. Upendo'Mpaji pinned his ears and swung his golden appendage about in watever fashion he could, hoping to dislodge the vermin that had sunk its claws there.

"Oh I don't know," Mpaji said with sencerity. "That's where the thing I'm not supposed to tell you about is." He looked around warily, playing on the idea, and then shrunk down low to the ground, hushing the cubs and drawing them towards him with a paw.

"You see, long ago there was an old Firekin, a great friend of the goddess herself. He spoke the sky and legends that bore the sand, but one day, the sand monster got him." He looked terribly serious about the whole ordeal. "Try and try as he might, the sand would not leave him be, crawling into his skin and leaving horrible rashes, until one day he became the sand itself." Mpaji grinned, liking his made up story. "I've been told that he lurks near the oasis, quick to push the same curse onto others that was done unto him."

He lept to his feet and started off. "So, small baases, if you are to go there, you must be on your guard or you, too, will get the itching disease." He winked at them and started off towards the oasis.

Kienge bounced after his brother, eyes wide and focused on the swaying tail. As Kai caught it Kienge pounced and gnawed happily on the end, ears folded and tail whipping.

His keeper's desperate struggling won the tail free at last (from Kienge's grip, at least) and the cub sighed in regret. The escape was forgotten in a moment when Mpaji swept the two boys together and whispered dark fantasies. Purple eyes grew wide and awestruck as the older lion spoke of monsters.

Wooow. The cub nearly vibrated with excitement! The Oasis! Yesyes! He shot a grin at his brother and then trotted after Mpaji. He wasn't afraid, oh no. Just intrigued!

"Well, I don't think me n' Kai should be afraid!" Kienge beamed. "We're of the Blood!" At least, that's what Daddy always said. "We're royal! Nothin' would hurt us."

Tail high and nose in the air, Kienge pranced next to his keeper, very pleased with himself.

The older lions struggled to free his appendage had been successful. Not long after his brother released the tail, Kai did as well only to be swept up close ot his brother and told fantasies and stories. How intriguing!

"Wow! This could be fun!" He whispered to Kienge.

Kai bounded after his keeper with his tail flagged. "I can't wait! This if going to be interesting!" Turning his atention to Kienge he nodded in agreement. "Yea, no one or thing would hurt us, not with grandpa being a king!"

(( Sorry it took me so long. sweatdrop ))

The large golden lion rolled his eyes and laughed lightly. Yes, the supremecy had already started, and he was one dead, dead little slave. Rather, huge slave, considering he towered over every 'Blood' he'd yet met.

"Yes, Royal," Mpaji echoed. Almost every Firekin was royalty. He glanced them over carefully, his eyes saddened a bit. That was the curse of this beautiful race. So many would be born defected, or, if the heir came back, their bloodlines would be lost forever. It was a sickly thought, and it caused Upendo'Mpaji a temporary setback from glee.

Still, he couldn't afford to show such emotion near the cubs, so he kept that smile on his face.

He led them carefully over the sand, explaining things as he went. "I take this route, treading carefully. You little baas's may not have to worry, but I'm no king or grandson thereof. One wrong step and WABAM, I'm eaten by the sands."

He chuckled lightly as the oasis came into view, his leeps peeled in a curve over sharp and well kept teeth.

"Alright, small royals, have fun."

He sent them on their way with a flick of his tail, and watched carefully, waiting for them to get pre-occupied.

"The sands don't EAT lions, silly!" Kienge snorted and stuck his nose up in the air. Slaves and their strange superstitions! Still, the young firekin cast a doleful glance towards the still sands and tried to pick a path that looked less sandy. If that was possible.

He couldn't remain distracted from play too long, and not even the sand monster could occupy a youthful child's imagination forever. He cast a sly glance towards his brother.

"Hey, Kai..." Ears folded back and his tail lashed once in warning before he lept at his brother, whapping him on the shoulder with one black-coated paw. "TAG! You're it!"

Kienge took off like a rabbit, kicking up sand in his wake.
