First periods often catch girls a bit off guard. It takes many girls a few years of having a period before they get good at being familiar with their body and being able to tell a period is coming. I would be on the lookout for cramps and spotting, but keep in mind that it could come with no warning at all. Just keep a pad with you in your backpack or purse just in case when you are away from home.

I didn't start my period until I was 14, in the summer before I went to HIGH SCHOOL. And I had no idea it was coming.
Smart thing, keep a tampon AND a pad in your backpack. So... if it happens at school, you're prepared.

There aren't really signs before the first time you get a period unless it's like cramps or something. I don't even recall feeling cramps or having an upset stomach the first time I had it.
