i know that in the guard after training unless you get shipped you do drill "one weekend a month two weeks a year" how does army reserve work?

With Army Reserves you'll go through BCT (Basic Combat Training) in nine weeks and next you'll attend Advanced Individual Training known as AIT. Once you're done with those you'll go back into civilian life and you'll spend one week a month at an AR Unit Training. The biggest thing is that once a year you'll be doing FTX (Field Training Exercise) which lasts a few weeks I think.

Army Reserve is federal and only has an Army mission. Most of the units are combat service/support (CSS) being the folks who don't actually perform the task, but the folks who bring you the supplies, make sure your truck has enough fuel, etc.

Army National Guard is state and has a state and federal mission. Usually there are more benefits available choosing the Guard. There are more MOS's including Combat Arms available in the Guard.

Reserves are good for kids still in high school, they can join at 16 1/2. Then at 18 they will often go active duty, my husband did

Im Canadian, our reserves is slightly different.
our reserves are primaraly full combat arms, with only a few part time support units.
after Basic, soldier Qualification, and trades course, you tend to do only one night a week at your home unit then one weekend Ftx every 3 months.
there is also plenty of class B "full time reserve" (basically regular forces for a short period of time)
there is no end to the courses you could go on, in theory, you could be working every second weekend for 20 years beong on course,

We also have Brigade training exercizes. the whole brigade goes out for war games about 2-3 times a year.

If you are thinking about possibly going active duty join the reserves. Time in the national guard does not go toward federal retirement (except when deployed for federal duty) like active duty and the reserves. If you plan on being only a part-time soldier it is usually the way to go. There are more drill bases, more MOSs (military occupational specialty), more benefits than you would get in the reserves.

All the jobs in the guard are available in the reserves but some are extremely hard to get, especially combat arms. I was extremely lucky to get 11B Infantryman in the reserves. No one at the Milwaukee MEPS ever saw someone get an 11B contract in the reserves. I've switched to active duty since then and am now an 11C Indirect Fire Infantryman.
