My true Who story:
When I was 12, and already a fan of the show for seven years, my Dad took me to a Doctor Who convention. They had the trailer out front with all monsters and memorabilia and the Tardis console inside which I remember walking through and pointing everything out to my Dad and telling him exactly what everything was and what ep and which companions...I was a huge geek. blaugh
The guest speakers at the con were Mathew Waterhouse and John Nathan Turner himself. JNT was one of the sweetest, kindest people I ever met. The night before, the PBS station had run a marathon of Doctor Who until 4 in the morning. When I got his autograph, he asked if I'd watched it and was astonished I'd stayed up for the whole thing. He quizzed me on the episodes, asked me what I liked to do. He backed up the line and spent 20 minutes talking to a 12 year old american girl about what she liked to write and told me I could do anything I wanted to if I just wanted it bad enough.
I have an old, somewhat tattered autographed pic of John Nathan Turner that I can't seem to get rid of. biggrin He was the first adult who gave me a scrap of confidence in myself and I've never forgotten him. Because of him, I'm working on my first novel and last year, xbox mag published a guide I wrote for TES Oblivion in their strategy guide.
Later that day, he found me and my dad outside, by the trailer, me drooling at Bessy! and offered me a ride. That is my prize memory, taking a ride around the parking lot in the Doctor's car with John Nathan Turner. I miss that man.

Yeah, I liked him too. One of the very first Who events I went to was in March of 1987 when Sylvester McCoy had just been chosen to be the next Doctor. The Who Tour was coming to Atlanta already, with Jon Pertwee (maybe JNT also, not sure), & they added Syl! So we got to be some of the very first people to see him. I had just begun drawing what then was mostly a parody comic of the show that I called "Doctor Whatsit", although it was beginning to take on a life of its own. A friend told me to bring my scribbles along & demanded I show them to JNT. I was too shy...so he took my folders of art & marched up to JNT's trailer, knocked on the door & talked to him! JNT didn't shoo him off though it wasn't time to appear & it was a cold, damp day. He actually did look at the comics & told my friend I should send them to him at the BBC! gonk I did, eventually, & of course nothing came of it...but I kept at drawing Whatsit for years & years afterwards. None of it has or likely ever will be published, but it was fun. And Whatsit is both a mule of mine here & the mascot of my Doctor Who Fun Page (sadly neglected since I joined Gaia...need to get back to that...).
I thought more than once in recent years that I should send him a card or something with a Whatsit drawing or a link to the Fun Page so he could see how Whatsit had evolved in appearance from those crude sketches years ago...but then JNT died before I did it. I'm sorry he had such a painful end. He really did do a lot for Who, not least saving all those archives of the show's history that would have been destroyed if he hadn't taken all of it home.

Sometimes it is easy to knock JNT because he made a lot of mistakes and did some unpopular things, but no one can deny that he gave the show a facelift when it really needed it. Yes, I was sad when he died, as well. I hear that Gary died shortly afterwards, but I never knew the details.
